An insect in the family Phasmatidae.
They are also called walking sticks. Not so much the support aid, but it looks like a stick, and it walks.
This photo should prove how successful this strategy is.
It moves slowly and holds still most of the time.
My wife, a teacher,
said there were no stupid questions, only some stupid answers.

A very good question. This is what this particular species looks like: https://bugguide.net/node/view/843479/bgimage You can get some sense of their size. They are strict vegetarians, and can be very common at times.
