I was 17, went past a Oldsmobile Dealer on Sunday afternoon, there, alone, parked next to the garage was a brand new black, 442, leather two door, KEYS IN THE CAR, and, best of all, NO ONE AROUND.
Then, my thoughts went to my parents reaction, I reached into the car, removed the keys, locked the doors, and put the keys in the night drop box and walked home. With a big smile on my face thinking about what might have been.

I would have left the keys in it and simply locked the doors. Perhaps the owner would learn not to leave his keys in the car!

You are human. sometimes resisting temptation is trivial, like the second helping of mashed potatoes, other times it is like the situation you encountered. What you do even when nobody is around to see it may be more important than your public persona. So why not ask them if you can use the equipment to take photos for them. Sounds like you might produce better photos than they have been.

I agree. Everyone has wanted something at sometime that wasn't theirs. Finding that something that tempts one is called being human. It is what happens after that temptation that always determines what kind of person you are. I am sure that although the OP will always love to have the equipment, and may even look lovingly at it each time as they pass by, the OP has way too much integrity to act on those "wants" the wrong way.

I worked as a police officer. We would ask applicants if they ever lied or stolen something. If they said "no" we would look very carefully at their background since the vast majority of people have both lied and stolen something at some time in their lives. As simple as like; "No mom, I didn't eat that last cookie." or "He started it!" We all have feet of clay, the last perfect person was hung on a cross. As a police officer we frequently had access to ill-gotten gains and we would talk about the temptation and dismiss them simply because it was the right thing to do.

Were you tempted to hand a teller a note demanding money?

I always always ask my credit union for their spare $100 bills when they ask if there is anything more they can do for me today. They just laugh at me and finish the transaction we have started. I really would take those $100 bills if they would just give them to me. Does that make me an evil person that I am kidding them, do not every expect to see any of those "spare" $100 bills, and walk away without wanting anything more than the laughter? I think the OP is sailing in the same boat that I sail.

Back in my young days, I worked as a security officer aka store detective aka shoplifter catcher in a major dept. store in Chicago. The store I was assigned to was undergoing a remodeling which entailed knock down an outside wall. I had overnight watch duty which meant I was the only person in the whole store. My rounds included stopping by the office where all the money from each day's transactions was counted and held for pick up by Brinks. Just outside the office door was a stack of boxes with clothing inside lent up against the office wall. I still don't know why but I noticed a corner of an envelop sticking up between the wall and the top box so I pulled it out. It was fat with cash! $800 in CASH! Now in the late 60'st that was no paltry sum. At first, I had no idea where it came from but as I turned the envelop over there was the answer stamped in B&W. Brinks Armored Car Service, our store number, and the date and $800 in the amount column. You talk about temptation! I struggled with temptation ALL night! I knew if I kept the money and never mentioned it no one would ever suspect me. Only the office workers and Brinks would have been suspect. Not me cause I was nowhere around the cash pick up that day! I could have gotten clean away with it! Leave the next morning with the money tucked discretely away in my clothing was my plan. I didn't make much money and my wife and kids and all I could get for them kept rolling around in my head and a little voice kept assuring me it would be alright. But, another little voice kept reminding the money wasn't mine and stealing was a sin. At the store opening the next morning, I approached my supervisor and told her of the money! I've never been sorry! Am I a saint? YES! Am I perfect! NO!

Here's something to consider that no one else has mentioned. The fact that they are a business means the cameras are listed as inventory on the company's accounting books. If they would come up missing, someone, if caught, would be looking at charges of aggravated burglary, receiving stolen property, and probably a few other charges but all of them felonies. Overcoming temptation is ALWAYS a good thing.

Usually a crime labeled as, aggravated, means a weapon was used. That would not apply in this case. A person, Receiving, stolen property would not be the person who stole the property. Burglary generally means a person entered a locked building or automobile with the intent of committing theft or any other felony. If the OP works there it would be difficult to prove he knew beforehand that he was going to commit theft. I believe we are looking at grand theft.

As I said earlier he would be dumb to steal the items if he was the only one there during the time of the theft.

I don't think he was being facetious. But it in case we are responsible for the way what we say is interpreted.

[quote=fotoman1Lord what memories I had with my E-10.[/quote]

Not to mention the memories your E-10 has. What is it with girls in tight dresses? I shot a wedding for my nephew in a venue where more than one event was taking place. The biggest problem were guests popping up in from of me, with cell phones, when I was composing a shot. That part was a pain, but then the unexpected gave me a moment to smile.., and seemed to be a big laugh for the bride and groom. While shooting I noticed a gathering of a second party next to us, and a girl in a tight hot-pink dress. In a moment of weakness, and impulsive madness, I swung around and grabbed a quick shot of said lovely individual, returning immediately to the job at hand. I dumped all photos on to a drive and presented them to the wedding party. I'd forgotten all about my momentary distraction until I was confronted by the family, albeit with big smiles on their faces. I had to emphasize that while I was older than the bride and groom, I was NOT dead. While this is in no way stealing a poorly secured expensive piece of kit, or even thinking about it, it did involve stealing a moment and trying to conceal a rush of complicated thoughts somewhat hidden behind a silly red-faced smirk. Sorry to get off-topic but I was thinking like a camera.

BS!!! We are all tempted from time to time. So what? 99% of us resist the temptation and realize it is bad. Then we go on our way. Please tell us honestly you have never been tempted to do anything illegal. We will all be right here while you own it to yourself.

Oh to be among the perfect.

Dennis

While I have, from time to time, wished I had some possession owned by someone else, I have never been tempted to actually take it as the OP suggested he was. And I certainly wouldn't brag about strength of character by resisting that temptation as he has clearly done. After all if he wasn't bragging about his resistance to temptation, why bother posting this thread at all? It is self serving at best.

So the differentiation is whether you can safely get away with stealing and choose not to do it? Better perhaps to just not consider stealing in the first place.

I work alone in a place late at night for my “day” job. The other night I was looking for something and came across a bunch of rolling cases. In one, nicely tucked away in their little cubby hole in the case was two Canon 5D Mark IIIs with big long zoom lenses. There is no security and no cameras in the building. And yes I was tempted, dammit. I’m sorry. I’m human. LOL But I didn’t take them ok. I also walked by three professional Sony video cameras on sturdy rolling tripods. I was salivating so bad. All I have is a Canon 5D Mark II. Don’t judge me!!
