The plug-ins I have with PS Elements are Nik Collection and two older Topaz pieces: Simplify, and Detail.

The HDR module of Nik may not work with it, but can be used as stand-alone, should you purchase.

I have enjoyed PS Elements for several years. The expert tab is where you will find ability to use layers and layer masks. Much help is available online and here on UHH, including the post processing section:

I have no problems using the hdr module with elements 7 so I don't think it should be a problem with the newer version

There are many a software to lightly edit RAW files but for capture software that has built in camera presets, Capture One is at the top and gives you very accurate colors but is a light editing tool. Photoshop is still the King of photo editing and can do anything. It costs but it's professional software. For just an inkling of what can be done follow this guy on YouTube, he is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcmnfUXXgO0 Here he talks about how easy it is to remove CA from your capture. He's a fast talker but I like him! Now it's easy to learn Photoshop. Or get something very cheap with less features but understand it's limited (like using Luminar, it can see RAW files and perform some nice edits but its also very slow and you'd go nuts editing 300 shots let alone thousands made in a studio shoot).

PS - Both Capture One and Photoshop are used by NY Fashion photographers. To move the shot directly to computer FAST Capture One is it (for live capture viewing in studio to see on a large screen if the focus is dead on) and side liners pulling the edits use Photoshop.

Another limitation of Elements involves layers. It used to be that you needed Photoshop to use the powerful layers and masks tools to make selective adjustments to images. But now you can also do it in Elements. However, you can't save a file with layers from Elements (you can save a PSD file with unflattened layers in Photoshop... Basically this just means you have to complete any layers & masks work that you're doing in Elements, before saving and closing the file. With Photoshop you can save it unflattened, then reopen and do more work on it later..

Don't know where you got this information - or I'm mis-understanding what you said. PS Elements saves as psd with unflattened layers. I do it all the time - and yes, it's 8-bit 😇

As late as Elements ver. 2018, it doesn't even show up in the plug-in list, and was a problem when I bought ver 12. With ver. 12 the Nik compatibility site said, "Please note, HDR Efex Pro 2 is not compatible with Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements cannot support 32-bit images, which is a requirement for HDR imaging."

Perhaps one of the housecleaning updates DxO did to the newest Nik addressed:

I have found that working in 8-bit often produces images with banding in the sky. Thus, I prefer to use 16-bit which alleviates the problem.

Would someone please post the same image processed in both 8 bit and 16 bit? Please be sure to do it so I can download the files for comparison. Thanks in advance.
Let's take this discussion/demo to PP Forum. Would love to see banding introduced as I don't recall an issue, along with comparison of 8-bit to 16-bit. I provided three raw files:

I used Lynda.coms tutorial for Photoshop Elements 2018 and it has helped me tremendously!

Hi,
I downloaded the trial version of Elements 2019 and, I'm pleasantly surprised. I've tried most of the free editors online and just wasn't impressed by most of them. I think I'm going to skip the subscription to Adobe Cloud and buy a stand alone copy of Elements. I've got an old copy of PS, I think it's from 2013. I've used it over the years but, am nowhere near proficient with it. I am pleased to see most of the features that I've used are included in Elements.

I recently upgraded from a Nikon D7000 to a D500 and, I'm wanting to get into RAW and take my Photography to the next level. It should be quite an adventure for me. I plan on buying a good book to learn from. I'm also sure I'll be asking questions on the forum also.

One question, does Elements support plugins like PS does?

Thank you.
Bob

Lynda.com may be available for free through the e-resources of local libraries. Folks should look into that if they're interested. There was a lot I liked on that site: the way video lessons are broken into small chapters for easy return and review; the text accompaniment that can be copy/pasted, and more.

Lynda.com is free from my library and you are right about the short chapters. I am a slow learner and the short videos give me opportunity to watch them over and over (and over) again, until I get it right!

Plugins are rather limited in Elements, so is the ability to work raw files!

----------------
Elements Plus adds back in the vast majority of ACR functions from Photoshop that are usually missing in Elements.
