I'm just sick! Don't know how the settings switch into the Illustration Mode. After realizing some pictures were taken in Illustration mode, I found where to turn it off. At my daughter's high school graduation, at some point it switched back to Illustration mode. For the life of me, I can't figure out how that happened. Has anyone invented how to make these Illustration photos, regular mode??? If I had it my way I would permanently disable this feature!!!!

I guess you didn't shoot RAW? If you shoot in RAW the RAW files should be normal.

Extra Fine is a type of JPEG.

Shoot Raw, so this kind of C*%# never happens. All the Effects are to JPEGs. Must be a Sony thing too. All my Pentax cameras have the JPG modes hidden enough I'm never surprised when I do rarely shoot JPGs. And then I really only use Natural or Bright Color. I also believe you pretty much have to intentionally change those setting on a Canon camera (seen it done), they're also buried.

As Lamiacease has said But understand what a RAW file is. It's a pure capture using a jpeg as the viewing file. Being untouched you can always fall back on it to create anything. You cannot edit a RAW file but simply make edits and save as another file type. Though the files are large, they retain more data to work with and if you later want to do something else it's easy. You can even shoot saving both RAW and a jpeg. If you did so only the jpeg would be the artzy shot, Nothing touches the RAW file.

What do the "illustration mode" photos look like? Some of us have no clue. Perhaps convert to B&W then add sepia to make them look aged?

This speaks loudly about the challenges and risks of event coverage. You only get one chance. I often read posts by guys who have been asked to shoot a friend's or relative's wedding (having never done one before), asking what equipment to use, what to shoot, etc. I always think to myself, "Buddy, I hope you are a very lucky individual, because you have no idea of the risk you are taking and the withering embarrassment you may suffer." >Alan

I have the RX10M4 and setting the camera to Illustration Mode is pretty hard to do by accident. First you have to select the scenes mode, then from many scene options, you have to select the Illustration Mode. Not something the camera can do on it's own. Thus, a hard lesson to learn. I always take test shots anytime I shoot events. Checking to make sure my camera is functioning properly and performing up to par and I am in the right mode which for me is Manual (M).

They look like cartoons, thus the name illustration.

In another thread, we have been discussing feature overload in current cameras. I, like one or two others, would prefer fewer engineer's circus tricks but the great majority say I want every little feature so when I might need it will be there. Not when I DO need it, but when I MIGHT need it.

This is why it's not such a hot idea.

Thanks to all for the advice! Will change to RAW mode! It's just really strange because after it happened the first time, I would frequently check the setting. Sure enough at some point during the graduation, it switched over. I took many photos again in Illustration mode before realizing it had switched. Super paranoid now but by hopefully by putting it in the RAW mode, I can worry a little bit less!

This is kinda frowned upon around here on this site, but consider switching to raw+jpeg and just keep the raw for backup until you feel like editing more.
