You are no doubt also spoiled by the sharpness of your top-notch other lenses...

I have this lens and hadn't used it in a long time. I have a Nikon D750. I went to the zoo recently, hand holding and using back button focus with VR on. I realized that the VR is activated when you slightly press the shutter button down, it is not the same with back button focus. I turned off the VR and did get better images.
If this is not correct, please let me know.
I am posting one of the images
Settings, F6.3 1/60 Iso 1250 at 180 focal length. This image was taken hand held thru the glass.

Buy a better lens. The 28-300 is the weak link.

I have several *better* lenses. I think this is a great walk around/travel lens when you don't want to take many lenses or heavy ones. I have a good friend, has the best Nikon cameras..D5, D4 and she uses the Nikon 28-300 when she travels. She is an amazing photographer!!

It's fine for casual snapshots. Not suitable for serious imagery.

Hi, I recently purchased a D850 & 28-300mm. My dilemma is I don’t seem to be getting photos that are as sharp as I think they should be. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just a little info, I have been Shooting pictures for over fifty years. Puzzled. Thanks in advance. Jeff

Lens, lens, lens... Step up to a "Trinity" lens and see the difference.

Cheers!

I have no experience with the D850 but I do with the 28-300 lens. The lens has been used with a D750 and when the photographer did its part the lens performed to perfection.

Understand that zoom lenses are a compromise to favor convenience. A spread of focal lengths between 28 and 300 mm. is wide enough to create some optical problems. Understand also that technique plays quite an important role when shooting with such lenses and the aperture used is the first thing that comes to mind. The lens is sharp enough for the majority of the subjects you will encounter. If on a tripod with VR off the images should be plenty sharp.

I too have that combination and gotten excellent results. The person who suggested a calibration is right. Look at U-tube suggestions for doing that.

I have 10 Nikon lenses and decided to take the 28-300mm for a 8-day vacation in Rome last year. I only wanted to take one lens because we were going to walk the city. Here is a shot I took at the Vatican, hand-held.

I don't understand the bad rap this lens is getting.

Here is a list of lenses that Thom Hogan recommends for the D850. This has been out for awhile, so there may be some new lenses, such as the new 500mm lens, that are not listed. However, Hogan is the best source, in my opinion, for this kind of information. As of this time, he indicated that had not had time to evaluate lenses such as Sigma, etc.

I completely agree with you. It def has it's place. As we all get older, it gets more and more difficult to shlep heavy cameras and heavy lenses. This is a great alternative.

Yep. The occasion often determines what equipment one brings. I'll be heading out to SW Utah in a few weeks and I'll be bringing 3 or 4 lenses, tripod with my D850.

My D850 and 28-300 produce acceptable results. However I have several other Nikon lenses that all give sharper results than the 28-300. If you check the Dx0 ratings you will see the 28-300 is rated at 18 points. All my other Nikon lenses are at least 25 and into the 30's. The 28-300 is a reasonable choice to use for walking around or if you can only take one lens. IMHO, If you are serious about making images that can be enlarged significantly for framing, use another lens.

I think different lenses serve different purposes. Besides the 28-300mm, I own 70-200mm f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 300mm f2.8, 16mm f2.8, 85mm f1.4, 24mm f.1.4, 200-500mm f5.6 among other lenses. The 28-300mm is a great travel lens. DxO ratings are just one measurement of a lens' particular useability. There are many other factors.

I would not call the 28-300mm cheap, unserious or other derogatory terms. It is a fine lens for what it does. We don't all have to drive a Porshe 911 Turbo everyday.
