I read this on Brian Smith's Sony Firmware page. "All the latest Sony Firmware Updates are only compatible with Mac OS 10.12-10.14".

Read it and other firmware advise here - https://briansmith.com/guide-to-sony-camera-firmware-updates/

Not sure if this will solve your problem, but you might try e-mailing him. I believe he is very responsive and might appreciate hearing of your problem even if he can't help you solve it.

I am trying to do a firmware update for my Sony A6500 (1.03 to 1.06) using my iMac (10.13.6 OS). However, when I connect the camera to iMac, PlayMemories program on iMac starts and begins copying all images from iMac to itself. In the process it disables (or ties up) my trackpad. The only thing that I can do to interrupt this process is to shut the camera off. When I've tried to repeat the process, the same thing happens. I wasn't able to find a setting on PlayMemories to prevent it from automatically starting to copy all images from my computer and essentially take over the computer. Any suggestions?

I absolutely hate that Sony program, which has changed names at least once. The link below might not help, but it explains how to update the a6000, and you still have to connect to the computer.

I switched from iMac to PC to install update and update worked fine

Clever idea, and it gives someone a good excuse to buy the other type of computer. : )

Thanks. I will uninstall it and give another try.

How to disable the All Sync feature of PlayMemories Online.
Open PlayMemories Home application.
On the menu bar, click PlayMemories Online.
Click PlayMemories Online Settings.
Click Account.
Under All Sync, click to uncheck the Turn on All Sync box.

I had same experience, and I only have Mac. So after speaking to Sony support, I hooked mine to neighbors PC and all went well.

As big a fan as I am of my macbook, when it comes to updating my Sony's I use a windows machine. Sony and apple just don't seem to play together well!

Disabling the auto start should work. The only other issue is that the Mac OS software needs to be up to date. If it is older then you have to run a loader program before running the firmware update.

With regards to PlayMemories Home I still use that to download my photos and automatically put them into folders by date. The newer Sony program does not seem to do that. Does anyone have a way of downloading the photos in folders automatically by date WITHOUT the use of PlayMemories Home?

As far as I know, one updates firmware via an SD or CF card in the camera with the firmware Copied from your computer. Best to use a new blank card with only the firmware update copied to the card. I've done this for a number of cameras. Easy but DO NOT interrupt the update process once it starts and be sure the batteries are fully charged for that reason.

I may want to pass on Sony as well and stay with Pentax and Fuji for that reason alone. Seems Sony did some awful things to Minolta who made great cameras in their day.

I've followed the suggested procedure for disabling the auto start but don't see the option to do that.

I think that Sony cameras are great but SOny manuals, menus and updates are very poor.

I know that the procedure using an SD card for updates works with Canon but I don't believe with Sony.

On a Mac, start up PlayMemories and look under "PlayMemories Home" in the upper right corner. Clicking on that will give you a drop down menu, "Preferences" is the second item down. Click on the upper item to stop the Autostart and then click on the "Apply" button.

Thank you all. I've resolved the issue and completed my firmware update after uninstalling PlayMemories.
