I recently moved to Siesta Key, Fl and tried my hand at photographing boaters last weekend for the first time! Fairly happy with how they turned out (considering my ancient camera 😬) All shot with my ooooold Canon Rebel XS, 75-300mm lens- settings ranging from 1/1200-1600, f/4.5-6.5, and ISO 100-400, edited in Lightroom. CC welcome and appreciated! 😀

Need to bring down exposure and highlights on a few of the images that are blown out but fun set. I think I need to get out to the beach.

Very nice series of images. Really liking the third one, the action shot and water splashing. Well done.

Good set. Need to get out earlier when the light's better and the people have chill bumps to give 'em a little texture. There were a couple I wish I hadn't seen but overall, while I enjoyed looking, I really can't admit they made me homesick for FL. Go on foot to Lido Beach and report back with pics, please.

I agree with others that the 3rd pic is great!
I shoot a lot of racing sailboats and have found that unless it's really overcast, the following settings really help: ISO 800, f8 aperture priority, spot focus and spot meter. The ISO ensures that the speed will be at least 1/1000sec. The f8 ensures that the image will be within a depth of field envelope that will result in focus. The spot focus ensures that you are getting the intended target and not some random nearby boat etc. The spot meter very importantly ensures that the boat, jet ski, whatever that is the main subject will be properly exposed and not influenced by a lot of water or sky or sail mass. I have found that those settings get me very close and shooting RAW and processing in LR lets me tweak it even closer if necessary. I hope these ideas will give you the basis for some experimentation which you can then tailor to your specific situation.

Nicely done! You have a good sense of composition. Sure, you might like to tone down the exposure a bit and who knows even a newer kit down the road, but all in all, well done. As far as the goose-bump comment, at that range, no one could possibly observe skin texture.

I do sports car racing, similar issues with harsh light conditions. Aperture priority, iso of about 800 an f-stop of 8, or smaller and spot metering. Add a polarizing filter, that will help also.
