I took this one today. I learned how to place the lights. Too good to be real? Crop it any way you like.

1200mm lens f/16. I had to focus manually but I nailed it.

Beautiful composition and you have set a new standard for what is “tack sharp”. Thanks for sharing it.

I like the first one cropped but, this one really caught my eyes.

Your hummers are very sharp, well exposed and the colors are great. I saw the picture of your set up previously. I know it would complicate the PS removal of the feeder tube from the shot, but I would consider placing the tube on the other side, so the birds were coming into the flowers, rather than away from them. IMO would improve the "natural" appearance.

I good thought, thanks. Actually, it would be easier to simply flip the background photo left to right. It's not a simple photograph, It's a giant transparency that I had printed on clear plastic. There is much more going on in these creations than is apparent. For instance the transparency is tilted at about a 15 degree angle so that reflections from flashes can not be seen by the camera. It's a bit like a rear projection screen. I never know from which direction the birds will come or leave. I can exert some influence on their direction by the way I tilt the feeder tube that they drink from.

Here is a photo straight out the camera with zero adjustments or retouching done. I take bursts off exposures and hope the the bird will fly into the flowers.

Another good one Dave.
I've been wondering why the birds aren't facing the fuschia's, then I read some of your previous posts outlining your technique. Very impressive. Sadly we don't get hummers over here.

The way they face is a random thing. It's sad that you don't get these little birds where you live. Today my feeder was almost empty. I decided to go outside, take it down and refill it. As I walked towards the feeder I could see a hummer approaching the feeder. I stopped and watched to see what she would do. She ignored me and got a drink. She was only about 4 feet away from me. After I refilled the feeder with fresh nectar and came back into the house, I looked out a window and could see the bird was already drinking the nectar.

Where I live we only see them in the summer months. In warmer parts of the country there are a lot more of them and they stay all year long.

When they say they are going to "show a little leg." They mean a "LITTLE" leg!
