I'm scheduled for surgery next week for a complete separation of my Achilles tendon in my left ankle. My son says that's what happens when a 65 year old guy spends his time chasing around and photographing big Alaska Brown Bears instead of playing chess.
Doc says it will be a three month recovery. No Alaska trip for me this year It was going to be a great one with a sister, 2 brothers and a sister-in-law.
I have had a bunch of family photos (a couple hundred) I've been planning to photo-copy for more than a year. What better project to work on with 3 months on the sidelines staring me in the face?
I just received a photo-copy set up with LED lights from B&H. Who knew it would be that expensive?. So between the copy project and hassling all my UHH on-line buds, I think I will be able to keep busy.
I'll let you all know how it comes out.

Chief: I wish you fair winds and clear horizons.
Please be well. Check in from time to time.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Happy Resting for now!

So sorry, Keith and hope you have a very speedy recovery, and if time appears to fly by for you as it does for me, then three months may seem like a blink in hindsight! Take care!!

Thanks, Swamp-Cork. I appreciate it. I think the worst part is missing the trip to Alaska. But there's always next year, or so they say. Yeah, I've got some projects lined up so it should keep time moving along.

Wishing you the best to a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Sounds like you have your activities planned out for the next three months to keep you busy. If you get start to get an itchy trigger finger, consider doing some macro photography around the home.

Take care, Chief.

Chief ... I never saw this post & only found it now because I was looking for your White Sands post ... I truly hope you came through the surgery well & that you're healed. Best of luck. Oh ... & tell your son that he should be so lucky to be able to chase bears at 65!!! I say go for it (cause I'm older & still chasing bears)!!!!!

PS: And good luck with the family shots ... I have about 200 old college shots someone asked me to scan, but have never gotten to them. If you're looking for something to do ... let me know. ;)

Just don’t let the bears catch up. Always have a friend (enemy) you can trip up so you’re ahead.

I'm on the downhill side of similar surgery, have high hopes for both of us. AND I understand how having something to do during recovery is important, your time well spent is a bonus.........I highly recommend a knee scooter as my hands preclude the use of crutches..............the best to you

Now that's funny ... it reminds me about a bear that had learned how to break into a small shed I had in those days, where I kept fish food for my trout pond. At 1st light one morning, I saw the bear (Black) come out of the shed & start back into the woods. I decided to follow it & my nephew wanted to go with me, so off we went. We moved very quietly & we could hear the bear rummaging around ahead of us. My nephew, who was quite young at the time, pulled on my pant leg & whispered "Are you afraid Uncle Frank?" I whispered back "No Daniel, I'm not." He nodded his head & started to continue following the bear, when I tapped him on the shoulder & said "But Daniel, you didn't ask the right question which is why am I not afraid?" Of course, he took the bait & asked & I said "'Cause I can run faster than you Daniel!!!!" He thought for a moment, then decided it was time to go inside. So we sat down & I told him that as long as we weren't interfering with a cub or the bear's food, it would be more interested in getting away from us. That was 30 years ago ... & he still reminds me of that story when I see him.

PS: I just finished a 6 week trip out West & up into Canada & I've started a series of posts on UHH, so I'm probably giving away something I planned to share later ... but this discussion has me thinking about bears ... we went to Yellowstone & at one point, saw a female Grizzly with her last year's cub chewing on a carcass. They seemed nervous which initially I thought was due to some Buffalo moving through ... but no, they paid no attention. Then 2 Gray Wolves moved in & I thought maybe that's what she was nervous about ... but no, paid little or no attention to them either. Then just as it was getting dark, over the hill came a very large male Grizzly!!!! And that was what she was thinking about. A male Grizzly will kill cubs to induce the female to come into season. We heard that the prior night, she had run off when the big boar came in. But this night, she ran off a short distance, then made a bee line for him. She always stayed between the boar & her cub but it was clear what she was looking for. At the same time, a Gray Wolf came in to watch. The light was poor & I was 250 yrds+ away ... but because I had a really good long lens & the magic of post-processing, I was able to get this shot. It's grainy, so not a great technical shot, but a wonderful view into the behavior of those creatures in the wild that we chase.

Thank you Still healing. I'm supposed to get the stiches out next week. I'm sure getting tired of hobbling around on crutches but I think that will continue for awhile. If all goes well I should be able to make it to Alaska next year for more bear chasing. I appreciate the good wishes.
And send the photos on over, at the rate I'm going I will be finished way before I can walk normally.
Really nice bear shots by the way.

Thanks, napabob. And I share the high hopes for us both. I bought a knee scooter and it's great. I promised to donate it to the Doctor's practice after I no longer need it. His face lighted up like it was Christmas. I live and travel full time in an RV, no room inside for the scooter so it's crutches for inside.

All of the stories about "bear chasing" reminded me of something from about 25 years ago.

I worked part time weekends and summers for a friend who owned a large police eqt and gunshop. One of the other part timers was a local cop who was an AVID bowhunter. He used to kill time when business was slow by talking about and planning a trip to Alaska to hunt brown/Kodiak bear. One day he was working on me to go along and be his backup with one of my rifles or a combat slug gun. After a while I got tired of the non-stop sales talk and told him
"I will go if you can arrange for me to hunt the Kodiaks MY WAY."
He: "What will you use?"
Me: "A 25mm Bushmaster from the turret of an M2 Bradley!"

That was the end of "Why don't you come with me?".
