Why is a ball head useless on a monopod?

It's not that was an absurd statement! A ball head is great for a monopod!

One man’s great is another man’s useless when it comes to monopods...and heads. 😎

I am looking for a monopod recommendation. I like to shoot a lot of nature -- flowers, insects and the like and get tired of supporting my 100mm macro lens. A lot of times I'm close to the ground or squatting and was thinking perhaps a monopod could help take the weight of my canon 7d mark ii and my lens. I also have a mpe-65 lens with flash that I haven't played with yet. Do you have any recommendations for me. Besides the monopod itself, is that anything else I should get with it? I'm going with an acra swiss system for my tripod and ball head.

one excellent use of the ballhead is for getting pix of ceilings or other high angles without having to fall over backwards.

and a big advantage of monopods over tripods is negligible time in shifting from one position to another - eg, bumblebees on flowers

I recently purchased a tripod that has one leg that can separate and be used as a monopod.

I don't think a monopod will do for you. You need a tripod with a reversible Center Post. This link is an example not necessarily a recommendation

https://www.ebay.com/itm/K-F-Concept-Professional-Tripod-Monopod-Transverse-Center-Column-Ball-Head-DSLR/192253161960?hash=item2cc32e71e8:g:xq8AAOSwUM5aJK8S

mine is a bogen 3021 it's an older model that with an allen wrench I can separate the Center Post turn the thing upside down and do what you want to do.
