I agree with the black velvet. The black velvet backdrop I have has two different sides. One side is matte, the other side is shiny. My subjects will often choose the shiny side. The reason? "Because I like it better."

Fabric stores here in USA have upholstery velvet and dress velvet. The dress material is blacker but does have a little bit of a sheen. I have two 3 yard long pieces sewn together to give me a full "seamless" sized backdrop. I block as much light as possible from hitting it.

For macro work in confined spaces where lots of light will hit the background, I use a piece of black flocking material made for lining telescope tubes. Super black but too expensive for large sizes.

I have used black velveteen fabric purchased from a local fabric store for decades. Lighting is a concern, but is not difficult to work with. The example that I have attached was photographed in my front yard on a haze bright day about two in the afternoon. Black velveteen was placed in a shadow of a tree and flying water use back lit by a haze bright sun. Black velveteen works great in most all situations. Don Gorzek of Menomonee Falls, WI.

Thank you all for the advice and links most informative,I have just bought second hand a solid thick black 2 Mt square professionally made photo backdrop for £8.50 ! Just cannot go wrong for that price.
So I,m hoping as I cannot move the subject far from the background to to space confines,that between the black backdrop and using the info about aperture etc etc I can drum up what I want.will post when I get the time from my caring role and co operative putty tats to shoot a few photos finally !!!

High speed sync works very well for creating a black background, even outside in daylight. (If your camera and speedlight have HSS capability.)

I went to a material/sewing warehouse and purchased a length of black cloth that works very well. I have smaller pieces that I use in a lightbox. The cost was minimal and I could get whatever length I needed.

I once got a black background in broad daylight. Fairly late afternoon in the shadow of an Italian Cypress, had subject about 5 feet from the tree with camera close to the subject.

Here's a trick I used long ago. Go find the ugliest, cheapest vinyl flooring you can find. It's up to 12 feet wide and can be as long as you like. Turn it over and paint the smooth back side with matte black paint. You can hang it and roll it up when not in use. If you need a different color at some point, simply repaint it in your color of choice. It is easily washable, even in white and if it gets scuffed up, just repaint.
