I am always on the lookout for cameras and or lenses when I go to thrift stores and yard sales although often I have come across good deals at estate sales. There unless the seller is being a jerk or is obviously well off I try to tell them if a price is substantially under priced.
I just recently had to convince a good friend of mine to not sell the tiffen 77mm tiffen neutral density filters she had that were still in the boxes for only five dollars each.
She got them all in a box of stuff from an estate sale and was mostly interested in the lenses in the box for her camera.
Turns out that the box was leftover inventory from where the deceased had to give up his camera shop and his children had no idea of the value since the shop closed down about ten years ago.
She ended up listing the filters for slightly below market value minus the three she gave me out of gratitude and more than made her money back.
The box had about twenty filters in it.

My daughter in law gave me an XT, I get very good photos with it, I like it, its only 8 pixels but I don't plan on doing any billboards.

Good for her and good for you..... People will usually listen unless, like you say they are a jerk, or just really want to get rid of stuff and will sometimes sell it cheap or give it away ...

I went to a yard sale in Mendocino while there, after lunch at Patterson's pub. They said no set prices, donations only. Whatever you want to give. It was to raise money for their kids to go to school.

Brewsnapper, thanks for looking. It is actually 8mp, and will print 8x12easy at 300dpi or 12x18 at 200dpi. It records raw and fine jpg at 3546x2304 pixels.

The manual says actually size A3 or larger, which is 11.7 x 16.5 inches.

If they just want to move it quick is fine but usually especially at estate sales the sellers are not aware of the value.
If they are and are still willing to do it then of course I will buy it but if I don't tell them I feel like I am taking advantage of the situation and their loss

About everything I own is used. I have picked up some great bargains at the local thrift store. Here in Utah the Deseret Industries stores are a great place to visit often. I always go in and check the collectibles area. One of my latest bargains was a large bore Gerhard Baier trombone with f attachment for $155.00 in almost new condition. It pays to keep your eyes open.

You are correct about estate sales, run by the family, as they are fill of grief and things usually happen pretty fast.

Estate sales run by a business are different, they know the prices.

Kudos to you for enlightening them...... Once you have told them the price is too cheap, and
they still want to let it go cheap, get it with no guilt.

Thrift stores Yes, pawn shops around here, not so much. I went by a pawn shop that had a whole bunch of old, tired, bicycles out front. In the middle of the bunch was a Schwinn Madison. Looked just like the rest of the bikes but the shop owner did his homework and looked up every item in the store and priced them accordingly. Same for his"old" camera gear. Haven't found many deals in pawn shops.🙁

Excellent shots Frank, glad you made such a good purchase. Your shots confirm, within reason, that most often it's the photographer, not the camera.

The only good deal I have ever found at a pawn shop is my first good 35mm camera. I went into a pawn shop in Fayetteville, North Carolina one pay day night while in the army. They had a nice Petri Green Window rangefinder camera. The salesman started at $35.00 and I at $17.00. We finally met at $25.00 and I bought it. It was still brand new. It contained a roll of B&W film, which I finished off and had developed. There was a shot taken in Korea, one in Hawaii and one somewhere in the US. I figured a soldier bought it in Korea and took one shot; another on his way home and a final one at home. After he arrived at Fort Bragg he hocked the camera for beer money and I came along and found it. I still have that camera. It still works but the rangefinder is out of alignment now.
