Does that then push you to remember where you shot what. Personally I want to sort by whatever multiple categories make sense to me. Maybe that is because of my years working in document management. Saving some documents or images is useless if you can’t find it again fairly easily. That’s why I like Lightroom, it does a pretty good job fairly easily. It is also very flexible.

I can just imagine hiking, shooting a lake, turning around, seeing flowers,
wait, I have to change cards.........

Kinda. I basically know (remember) what was at a location I shot and what wasn't. I know I have no pictures of lakes in my Albuquerque or Santa Fe shots. Then there's always the "Tag" field in the metadata.

Who remembers the timex-Sinclair 1000 (jokingly referred to as “the doorstop”)? It boasted 3.2K. Extra 10K attachment about $40. You could attach up to four of them. This was the very early 70s. In the late 50s there were three ENIAC computers in United States. One was across the street from where I lived. It ran on 10,000 vacuum tubes. It required two full floors to provide air circulation to prevent overheating. When it turned on, the neighborhood power surge caused the TV picture to shrink momentarily. And you could not watch channel 2 (W CBS), because of the RF interference. That was a 10 K computer. Then came the transistor, and the world changed.

I remember those. I even have one with the optional memory module stashed away in my attic. Bought it and never used it.

Prices will drop for sure but not that quickly. My 128gb CFast card cost $360 nearly 3 years ago and the zero has not dropped away...
You may be correct on your card - they know people will continue to pay more for that type/brand of card, kind of like people paying much more for an iPhone or iPad for the Apple icon. But this was just a standard SanDisk 1Tb SD which very well could be 1/10th the price in a couple years. 512 Gb are already down to $79 in just months.

I would also bet that the MTBF for that drive was only 10,000-20,000 hours. Now, the MTBF for hard drives is easily in the 6 figures.
Sure you are correct... with 10-20K hrs mine would fail in a year or two today. But back in the day I would listen for the "gravel sound" in the spin to know it was time to replace it. Today, assuming a 1 million hr MTBF, that is over 100 years running 24/7.

My first IBM PC, not XT, had a 6 M hard drive with 128 k RAM
Yep, those were the days. My first XT also ran at 8 Mhz, that I over-clocked to 10 against all advice... but what speed!!! <grin>

Is there a specific reason you never format and reuse your memory cards?

I bought several CF Memory Cards because the go on sale from time to time at various stores. There is no particular manufacturer that I prefer. So I stock up.

I generally use 16 GB and 32GB CF Memory Cards. Sometimes, a 64GB card will go on sale but that is rare. I have never seen a 128GB card on sale.

A 64GB card will sometimes hold about 7900 photographs. Generally, in camera folders make it easy to sort images by date.

When a card is nearing its capacity, I shut off the camera. I remove the card and then copy the files through my computer onto the hard drive. I organize it by files on the Drive. Any edited photograph has the file name changed slightly and a trailing alphabet letter is added. It is filed alongside with the original in a folder on the Hard Drive and is also stored here. Then I eject the card from the card reader and remove it. I will label each card by number and date.
The original card is placed in a waterproof case and filed away.

With 18 CF memory cards of various sizes I have yet to fill up a 1TB hard drive. With all of these cards they would pile up but I have them neatly organized.

Yes, it is tedious but I have time. Otherwise my wife will make me do the dishes and fold the wash. LOL!
As for reformatting them, I have heard many of the horror stories and avoid these tragedies by doing this.
