Door number two, I'm totally OK with parts of things and out of the two, by far this is the cleanest image, composition-wise. I don't like the vertical distraction produced by the room corner in the first. Both have uneven light which could be maybe fixed in post. And, finally, I *do* read the music and am very happy most of my tuba parts aren't so black. ;0)

Prefer the 1st. Curiously, I played Bass in High School orchestra. Not easy for someone 4' 11", although it may have been 3/4 size, don't really remember was 54 years ago.

I like the 1st one best. It has a lot of detail and contrast, giving it depth. The sheet music is not the focus the bass is. If I were going to paint one of these pictures it would be the 1st. The second seems shallow without focus or purpose, perhaps a memory shot.

my preference is the first photo. It tells a story. Personally, I like seeing the whole page of notes, they are just as important as the instrument playing them. Great concept.

Ben, I like the first one, but wonder why the banding of the light on the wall. The second one doesn't have the banding.

Not sure, Bob. I was using room lights because I had a body and lens with my but not even a speedlight. Thanks for looking.

Number one... Shows more of subject and seems to be a bit better focused...

Darker would have suited my style. Using the shadows and not focusing on anything in particular. I would have angled the main light source towards the wall of right in the corner. then use a mirror or alternative to redirect the light into areas of the images.

I had no control over the lights at all. They were recessed in the ceiling and all I had was a body and lens.

The first one is much more compositionally pleasing, unified, and evocative.

I like the idea. I prefer the first one because I like the composition better. It's more obvious that you are looking at a bass. In the second one it takes a little more effort to figure out what you're seeing. One man's opinion. Nice work. I like the warm b/w treatment.
