On recent trips to The Grand Canyon, Canyon De Chelly, and Montezuma Castle, I took a total of 13 photographs. All but one of them I'd be happy to hang on a wall. The one I wouldn't was simply a fun shot of the front of a motel. There are two from Montezuma Castle that I have yet to process. So, the jury is still out on those. I'll be processing them this coming week. The only difference between them is the use of a filter. So, I'll chose which I like better once I see the tonality of each.

My question for everyone on here is this. Out of all the shots you take what is the percentage that you would consider displaying on a wall in your home for anyone to see? Not that I take a lot of pictures but out of what I have taken, I find very few that would be worthy of displaying. My girlfriend thinks a number of my shots are beautiful but I disagree. Then again, I am a very harsh critic of my photography and can always find something wrong.

I haven't printed a photo in over a decades, but I have a few billion photos on USB drives cycling through on 11 42-65" smart TV's hanging on the walls.

I am sorry for you, this is sad and pathetic. Suppose Beethoven had written his symphonies and then put the scores in a desk drawer. Complete the cycle. A print is your performance. Cycling video displays don't even begin to compete. Cycling ones are just a way to avoid picking the really good ones.

And a few billion photos? I'm not convinced there are a billion great images in the entire history of photography.

This thread seems to be divided between those who regard themselves as Masters of Photography and can do no wrong with their cameras, and the rest of us mortals that have standards and are quite self critical, but even more importantly, understand that there is no such thing as photograhic perfection and are always seeking to improve - just like yourself.

Yep!

I'm a much better photographer today than I was fifty years ago, but my standards have also gotten higher and I see many more flaws in my work than I used to. The fact that in certain situations I shoot a lot more frames using digital than I did with 35mm, not to say medium format or 4x5, decreases the percent I wish to share with family/friends or print for hanging (I'm old fashioned that way - much prefer a good print to a digital display). I do find that I "keep" a lot more RAW images than I probably should, because I see something that I may want to explore further in post processing. Although I kept most all of the negatives I ever shot, a much lower percentage seemed to hold the core of something further in post processing. I never had a color darkroom, so that also makes me hold out hope for a far higher percentage of color images.

I'm never satisfied with my own work, but at least I do see myself making some growth and progress.

In the 5 years or thereabouts that I’ve been involved in photography, I probably have 10-15 images I’m proud of. My problem is subject matter. Unless you’re dealing in the abstract, the subject is what ultimately decides an image’s potential. Where I live in South Carolina, the subject matter is just not there. It’s depressing. I read somewhere that subjects don’t come to you, you have to go to them. I guess I’ll have to go a little further. Maybe then my keeper rate will go up.

I also became interested in photography approximately 5 years ago when I retired. I live in northern New Jersey and have similar feelings about the absence of interesting subject matter. What I’ve done is change my “focus” of interest. I’ve become interested in Street photography, flower photography, birds, and macrophotography. This morning I was trying my hand at long exposure photography at a local stream with small waterfalls. What about those old barns and farms out in the country or a cypress swamp? We all wish we lived out west with unlimited vistas and national parks. Hopefully, next spring I will be in Charleston, S.C. to photograph the beautiful plantations and flowers.

Wow. I am not trying to be dismissive to all who replied but I feel the replies veered off track. A little back story if I may. Last year we moved to a small mountain cabin in western NC and have been in the process of remodeling it since then including nice wood paneling on the walls and my girlfriend wanted some pics printed out of different things I have take photos of in this area. I was just curious from those on here what percentage you would display on your walls. Ones that you were basically proud of. I understand not all photos are keepers but it seems that is what this topic became.

Welcome to UHH, by the way. We argue about everything. As you can see, there are different ideas about this.

I would print and hang the ones my girlfriend likes in that situation.

What a great question. Maybe 25. Maybe 5. I think I know what is interesting and creative and pleasing.

Have you considered visiting Coastal Maine or Acadia? LOTS of photo opportunities there!

Returning to the basic premise, then, I'd stick with my original thought - about ten percent of my shots, over all my years, have I thought worth printing and framing. We have lots displayed - at home, given to family members and friends, and on the walls of my office. It goes up and down depending on subject and purpose (how many photos of my grandson playing baseball can we devote wall space to? How many views of a specific favorite place? etc.) but I'd say if you're finding ten percent of your work worthy of consideration for framing and display, you're a pretty good photographer. Is that more like the answer you were thinking of when you posted?

Yes, thank you. Even though I have taken photos for quite a while, I usually find some kind of fault with them even if somebody says "Oh, that is really nice". A problem I guess I need to address.

Are you concerned about things that don't need concerning?

I think that is true for most of us.

The title threw everyone off. That's a viable statistic that many people track.

I only have room for about six as we have other artwork hanging. But my wife wants to pick one of the ones from Acadia for a 24x36" (minimum) canvas print for the dining room. Proud of a lot of them, just not enough wall. A digital frame has been running in the family room for years.

I gotta feeling he is far too easily impressed with his own work. . . Don't you agree?

Anyone who currently does not work commercially and claims 50% or more so called keepers - well, just take a look at their work and that will be a measure of their image quality standard. I am not saying they are wrong - just that they may be not be looking at their work all that critically.
