the ergonomics of their digital cameras?

Ha! I was thinking the ergonomics of the digital cameras, but now that you mention it, the button placement and grip shape of my Nikons do seem to fit my hands better than the other models I’ve tried. My hands aren’t overly large, I’m extremely right handed, and I have arthritis in two fingers.

One of the most important qualities in a camera is your familiarity and comfort level with it. Thinking about anything but composition, intended exposure, and intended focus hurts results.

I'm just thrilled to see Sony enter the discussion (in your thread title).

I have and use both brands but tend to prefer the Canon only because it was the first SLR & DSLR I ever owned and am more comfortable with it's operation. I have many other film cameras from every continent since WWII......love them all and wouldn't part with them.

I'd like to be buried with them I think...HAhahaa

Darn it, people, the world of photography exists beyond Canon and Nikon! Oh, and Sony. Why is it so hard for people to not mention Pentax when it comes to this subject? Huh, I'm not asking this question rhetorically. Please, somebody tell me why Pentax doesn't get thrown into the mix? I am NOT saying that Canon, Nikon, and Sony aren't quality cameras. But for all you photographers out there who simply decide to choose one of these brands, did it EVER occur to you to check out Pentax and then buy one? Did anybody ever decide to NOT play "follow the leader" and instead consider and purchase a Pentax...or a Sony or a Leica or a Hasselblad or a whatever? Again, Canon and Nikon are great....but so are Pentax cameras and it's high time they started getting more attention!

I have about 10 lens for one brand camera, so very difficult to change. Some of the newer cameras come with adapters, but not to go from a Canon to a Nikon. i would love to get the d850, but now we are talking thousands in new lens. I have a 5mk4, am pretty happy with it but want a higher megapixel since I crop many of my pictures. I've considered the 5DSR, but from feedback if one had a choice as a standalone purchase the d850 is the preferred. I hate to wait too much longer for new cameras as I am getting up in years. Mirrorless, perhaps, but the Canon r is only 30 mp. i do not do sports, mostly stills, landscapes, grandkids, flowers, birds, architecture. i have no need for video. not sure what to do. I guess I should rent a 5dsr and see if its what would meet my needs.

If your local camera store has a rental program, I'd take advantage of it. They usually apply rental fees toward purchases, but if they don't, you'll still have a better idea of which brand DSLR tool you'll want to buy.

A serious question deserves a serious answer.

I think the primary reason is that Pentax threw in the towel on the “pro” market many years ago, lacking the resources to compete successfully. And of course we all think we are “pros” or would be if we just had the right gear.

Mercedes does indeed eventually use tech developed in Formula 1 for their production models, but the major reason for their multimillion dollar racing effort is that they want to convince us old fat guys that we’ll suddenly be like Lewis Hamilton if we buy a product with the emblem.

Over the years, the consolidation of manufacturers of tech products is inevitable as development and marketing costs increase exponentially. Autos, aircraft, computers, and cameras are just a few examples.

On one hand, it seems inevitable, but I do think Pentax might have been able to win over a slice of that pro market. Their DSLR line is still a fine choice for many, superior in some aspects to the big three.

But IMHO they never really tried.

Yes, Sony is good (I have and still use an H1), Pentax AND Minolta SLRs were great.
My first camera happened to be a Canon Ex-Auto, as well as my second (Ftb) and third (AE-1). I was pleased with Canon, so what the hey. Then I got a Sony Mavica (digital), then the Sony H1, then a Canon T1i.
No money for a Hasselblad, OR a Mamya RB-67 back then... I did wind up with a Yashica Mat-124 though. Canon is just my first preference, from experience. I do like the saturation that the H1 creates, as well as it being able to focus down to 2 cm. I borrowed a Pentax K-1000 once for a week. That was a nice camera also. I don't go by/for most popular or "neatest", I go for what "I" believe will meet my needs the best, and it fits well.

Just as interesting as the different camera models and features to compare, comparing the line up of lenses is fun, Canon has some lenses Nikon does not have and Nikon has some lenses Canon does not have, for the Photography that You do it is fun not only to match the camera models to your Photography but also the lenses...Canon and Nikon have the most Extensive Lens Lineups of any Manufacturer with Tamron and Sigma also making great Lenses for them...I shoot Fuji my longest lens is the 100-400 with 1.4 teleconverter with one stop loss of light and 840mm of reach, Nikon D500 with the 200-500 Nikon Lens gives 750mm with no teleconverter and with the Tamron/Sigma 150-600 lenses, 900mm with no teleconverter, Canon Crop Sensor Camera with the 100-400 Canon Lens gives 640mm with no teleconverter and with the Tamron/Sigma 100-600 lenses 960mm with no teleconverter, can make a difference in photographing Wildlife...

Actually - its more like Toyota vs Honda. Both are high quality, well made, reliable products.

Sony is Lexus.

The pricing would determine that, no?

Are Sony models priced 15-25% higher than Canikons of similar capabilities? Not arguing quality here at all - but I was of the impression that all three had similar price structures. Am I incorrect in this assumption? I rarely if ever price the LAG gear, so I’m kind of uninformed on this point.

I've used Canon, Pentax, Kodak, Polaroid, Nikon (for a week) and now Sony full frame mirrorless.

Of course, the lens and sensor impact image quality BUT the person behind the camera 'creates' the image!

Ask yourself this question, can I determine from the photograph which camera body and lens were used to make that image? The difference between a great photograph and a so, so image isn't the equipment, it's the photographer! My advice, stress less about brand names and find a kit that fits your budget and feels comfortable in your hand.

For what it's worth, I love my Sony DSLRs. >Alan
