At this point in time, way less than 1%. Probably less than 0.01%.

My keeper rate is around 3% based on editing / culling this week from an original count of nearly 2500 images. Willing to actually print and frame any of these is probably half this amount. I only keep what is good and unique, so it takes some fortitude to delete otherwise good images that are too similar to other images taken of the same subject. Rather than printing, get a digital frame and just keep adding your good stuff onto the SD card and let it run 24x7.

When I shot black and white sheet film, it was probably 80%. Shooting one shot every 10 mins will ensure that you carefully consider your camera settings, composition (upside down and reversed on the groundglass), and focus.

I am a better photographer today, after about 52 years of experience, and my quality standards have gotten way better, the gear has changed considerably allowing for more test shots, etc. So, if I were to shoot a horse competition, I strive for 90% at the very least. But when I am shooting for myself - if I shoot 3500 pictures a week, I am thrilled if I have 3 pictures that I'd hang on a wall.

My question for everyone on here is this. Out of all the shots you take what is the percentage that you would consider displaying on a wall in your home for anyone to see? Not that I take a lot of pictures but out of what I have taken, I find very few that would be worthy of displaying. My girlfriend thinks a number of my shots are beautiful but I disagree. Then again, I am a very harsh critic of my photography and can always find something wrong.

Yesterday I had 80%.
But didn't do spray and pray shots. Actually gave thought regarding composition, exposure and focus. I didn't take dozens of shots of the same thing, 1 and at most 3 because of bracketing.
That is generally my method. Do I display them all anywhere? No, as they are only of interest to me and perhaps my wife if she was along.
Do I indefinitely save all of them, usually no. I purge at least once a year.

If your keeper rates are low then you are not spending enough time with composition. Work the scene plan the shot then take the image. Too many point and shoot hobbyists never improve this rate because of this.

What's the point in counting? One week it may be 30%, the next week it could be 3%. Find places or subjects that give you a higher success rate.

In the 5 years or thereabouts that I’ve been involved in photography, I probably have 10-15 images I’m proud of. My problem is subject matter. Unless you’re dealing in the abstract, the subject is what ultimately decides an image’s potential. Where I live in South Carolina, the subject matter is just not there. It’s depressing. I read somewhere that subjects don’t come to you, you have to go to them. I guess I’ll have to go a little further. Maybe then my keeper rate will go up.

When I was shooting professionally (mostly portraits, some real estate) my keeper rate was about 20%. But that was because I had controlled conditions (lighting, etc.) Now that I'm shooting for me, my keeper rate is about 1%. That's because I take many more nature shots, family shots, event shots, and occasional landscapes where I don't control the lighting. It more fun than shooting professionally since I usually don't have the time pressure. Also, I often vary aperture, shutter speed, & ISO to experiment.

For events, we average about 10% "keepers". Out of that number, we process and cull to about half of the remainder. So, out of 1000 images, keep 100. Then, process and cull to the best 50 or so.

I think thinning the field is an important part of improving the skill of photography.
On a recent trip took around 1,500 images... pretty easy to chop down to 125 or so and harder to get it down to the 75 best shots... but important I think to be able to accomplish.

Printing and displaying on the wall is different than what you display in your on line portfolio. I have maybe 10 out of 35000 pictures in the last 4 years that are on my wall. Printing is very expensive. I am thinking that a 55" TV mounted on the wall to display my portfolio as a video picture frame. Or maybe several smaller TV's of different sizes as a video display wall. How's that for an answer.

Hi! I would LOVE to get a digital frame and just let it run ... that is a fantastic suggestion! Do you have any recommendations for me, like what brand and what size? Thanks so much!

Good question. Welcome to the HOG. This is the place to be. There is so much knowledge here and very friendly people that are more than willing to help out us that need it. I have been shooting probably 8 years now and I learn something new on here everyday. So Have fun on here and practice, practice, practice.
