My EM-1 has been working perfectly for several years and I love the camera. Lately, it has begun to freeze up after taking a shot. Not always but becoming more frequent lately. In frustration I removed the lens and saw the shutter was still closed. I called Olympus tech support and they said the shutter most likely needs cleaning. Not something I should attempt. They have me sending the camera to their US service center in NJ where it will be cleaned at no charge. Has any other Oly mft user had this problem? Is it unique to mirrorless cameras?

Mine did the same thing, it is a design flaw, they’ll fix it for free, I sold mine anyway, Nikons have never let me down

I have not used the Olympus EM-1 or the EM-1 Mk II but a Pen model (EP-5) and my EM-10 Mk II have been working to perfection.

It only effects the em-1i, a smack in the bottom will cause the shutter to reset so to speak, I found out that really all of them do it and Oly will repair them for free. I wasn’t enamoured enough of the camera so I traded it in

I had the same issue with my EM1 MKII, which was still under warranty and was fixed no charge, The turnaround took less than a week.

Sounds exactly like Olympus. I've been shooting Olympus since the fifties when I bought an Olympus Six folder. Really latched onto them in the early 70's when the OM's came out. In fact the first OM was called an M1, and they made a few hundred of them, before Leica complained and caused them to change the M1 to the OM-1. You can still find the original M1 on eBay more often than not. Still shooting away, No mechanical difference from the M1 to the OM-1.

I've owned all the Olympus 4/3 camera's including the E-1 up to the OMD E-M1 and had no fails.

On top of that, I will not have a colonoscopy done, unless the lab I go to owns and Olympus Colonoscope to wend it's way up my Colon.

I still own and shoot an Olympus E-1 Professional, and a tiny Pen E-PL1, which is the sharpshooter that Olympus began the trend of reducing and dropping AA filters and started the mirrorless movement.

I have not yet saved up enough money to buy an Olympus Colonoscope or any other of their industry leading medical optics.

Maybe next year, now that they have flavored that bowel cleanse one must drink for three days prior to a colonoscopy.

They didn’t really say, they just treated it like a regular repair. My guess was that it’s a fairly common issue with the camera.

Over "several" years and much use, the oils, as good as they are these days, will get thin and collect dust. Since it is not likely that it will take them long to correct the problem, send it to them. If they fix it for free, and you only pay the shipping there, compare that to the price of getting a new camera.

Mine blew up last year in the middle of a shoot. High speed burst; suddenly stopped and after waiting a few minutes to see if it started again, I removed the battery, put the card in my backup camera to see if it had captured what I was shooting (no) and continued with the backup.

The shutter was replaced and it cost me under $200. Last I had checked before this, I had over 80,000 shutter actuations. Not a lot by some camera standards, but still, not new either.
It works fine now, and since I have an MII as my main camera now, the M1 will last a long time.

I am not sure, now that you mention it, whether maybe a cleaning would have made it work. Hmmm!
