I have a Sony RX10 M4 camera which in my humble opinion is the best available. I am looking for a backup camera that doesn't cost as much but has a 1" sensor and a 2.8 lens. I shoot mostly stage plays with little light and no flash. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Canon G7X MII. It has a 24-100mm lens, which I enjoy, that gives a little more reach than most in this genre. Very good, maybe the best, in this price range.

How about a previous version of that model?

Excellent idea, don’t know why I didn’t think of that. Cost maybe an issue though. Thanks.

This has two advantages:

Both cameras will use the same batteries

You will be familiar with the operation of both cameras

If reach is not a problem, I'd also suggest the RX100, any of the versions. It has the added benefit of being very portable. Also, it has a 1.8 lens.

I carry my RX100M3 with a belt pouch all day, not much bigger than my cellphone.

I use a Canon G9X (Mark I) as my second camera. I have used it at school plays before, with good results. It has a 1" sensor and a f/2 lens. It is very small (fits into my shirt pocket)--it may be the smallest 1" camera on the market. The con is that the 3x zoom is somewhat anemic--it covers the 28-84mm range (full-frame equivalent). I love this little camera; it has excellent image quality.

I agree with you on the 1" sensor. I've been very impressed with the 1" Canon G3x I got my husband for Christmas. I have a 24 mpx FF and crop sensor. We have a 13x19 photo printer and I can blow up his Canon G3x and my ff and you would be hard pressed to tell a difference.

I've both a Sony rx10iii and a rx100v highly recommend both! I'm sure the rx10iv is even better in the focus dept.

Yup, me too ~ and, it'll even fit in a pant pocket. Much smaller and handier than a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for a "big" camera.
