I'm going for about three weeks to Zion, Bryce, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Canyon National Parks, flying from North Carolina. Should I lug my Nikon 200- 500 f56, or, be satisfied with my 18- 105, and 55- 200 kit lenses?

If the choice is the Nikno lens -OR- the kits, I'd take the kits.
You'd miss too many opportunities with the 200 being the low end.
Would the 500 be over-reach?

The answer is it depends upon what you want to capture. If it were me, I would also take the 200-500. It is a great lens and I enjoy the image quality

My thought, get a 2x converter and take the 2 kit lenses.

That would only work with third party converters if they are compatible. No Nikon TC will work with those kit lenses

Unless you plan to do a lot of hiking you will need your Nikon 200-500.

There are a lot of deer and some big horn sheep in the canyon and some of the other parks. It would be a shame to miss them without a long lens. And you can get some unusual perspectives into the canyon with a good telephoto. Personally, I never go anywhere without a long lens.

On a recent vacation...one of our stops was the Colorado National Monument. Stopped at one of the outlooks to take some scenic photos of the canyon. A guy next to me asked if I seen the couple climbing Independence Monument way off in the distance. All I could see was a couple of specs of color. Got my 200-500 out of the car and spent the next hour photographing them. Some cool shots of them hanging on their ropes and finally sitting on the peak enjoying the view. Sure was happy I had my 200-500 with me.

In my opinion the 200-500 isn't needed. Most of the best photos will be taken in the 24-70 mm range. I've been to all of these parks and they are spectacular.

Having been to most of those parks last year, you will have opportunities for all of those lens. You can decide at each park how much you want to lug! Great trip!

"going to [the park]"
Is that going by car or going on foot?
If you're in the car, take them all.
When you start footing it you can evaluate what you're likely to see and decide accordingly.
I might suggest putting the 200-500 on while you're in the car. If you see something in the distance you can stop and shoot quickly. If it's scenery the other lenses are there for you.

For things like that I like my 28-300.

We did the same trip you’re doing. I brought everything. What did I use? My 16-85mm 95% of the time. When we got back home, I was so tired of lugging it all around that I traded it all in for an Olympus micro 4/3s system (which I adore).
