Ever have a bad shoot?

I do most all my photography outside, natural light stuff and always with my 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Saturday morning I shot a 5k race and it turned out great, all the pics were spot on, seems like my 5D couldn’t miss a shot. The gal that put the race together ask if I was available later that day to shoot a gender reveal so I though why not. Got there when ask and the room was basically white, like everything was white from the walls to the ceiling to the tables and decorations. The room was full of Hugh windows so tons of light on top of the white. My go to lens was to long of course so I grabbed my 24-105 f/4 lens and it seems like the shots with more than one person in it just wasn’t in focus. I tried several different settings and even tried auto but was never happy with a single shot. I’d like to had more time to do test shots but it just wasn’t there. I do shoot raw but you can’t recover out of focus. By the way, this wasn’t a paid job, just trying to help a group of friends that I run with.

Any advice on shooting in a room like I described?

Post an example or two, being sure to store the file attachments, and we can give constructive advice based in the situation and the settings you were using.

Out of focus? When I am out of focus after switching lenses I;
1) check the AF switch, if that is not it then
2) turn off the camera, remove and remount the lens, if that is not it then
3) switch to manual focus, focus a random shot and then switch back to AF, if that is not it then
4) use manual for the shoot at f/8 or smaller.

Big thing now days.

It is an event to reveal the gender of an expected baby. Sometimes involving fireworks. They have started major forest fires.

Did you try manual focusing. I have been shooting a doc and social network campaign
for a upscale ballet school. Very difficult. I am shooting video. Pull stills from 10 bit video.
The studios are are all white walls and floor to ceiling windows on side. One would think this
would be great but exposure and focus is a problem When the dancers are facing from the windows
towards the instructor they are in shadow.
In this case I pushed the gainon the camcorder and showed the client the overexposure as a technique.

I think it is unfair for folks to say can you take a few shots on location. But it happens.

Lol good question in today’s world I guess, a couple is having a second baby, the parents have no idea if it’s a boy or girl, only the mom of the mother to be knows and they throw a party and part of it is where everybody learns the gender.

If we have to ask, we probably do not want to know. And like you, I have to ask.

To answer a few, I have never used manual focus and never had any trouble with my 24-105 but it’s not used much. Not every shot was out of focus, like they wanted decor shots and they were all good. Shots with people were where my issues were that day.

Without the above requested downloaded image and the accompanying EXIF data, troubleshooting, diagnosis and a remedy for any issue is difficult to arrive at.

Just for starters, the amount of light or reflectivity in a room should not influence focus.

The population in any shot (the size of the group) should also not influence focus, that is, if the entire group is out of focus it is not necessarily a DOP issue. If you chose an aperture that that woud have reduced the depth of field, at least, part of the image should have been sharp.

Is it possible that you accidently set the autofocus to a different mode or accidently turned it off?

With all that light in the room, you may have picked up some flare from stray light directly striking the lens, that you may have mistaken for an unsharp image. A dirty or smuged lens of filter woud have exacerbated flare which causes a general digration of the image quality.

Of course, this is just guesswork- a picture and the data will usually tell all.

Is your camera now working properly with that lens in place? This woud eliminate the possibility of a malfunction in the body or lens that would require adjustment or repair.

You can judge the quality of the guesses to determine the amount of help you'll get ... or you can post some examples, if you want something more than amusement ...

Exactly. That is why all I could suggest is what I do to reset the electronics.

Here is one where both people were out of focus, I used either P or Auto. Not sure what my poor camera focused on if anything lol.

That looks like a combo of a slow shutter speed and camera shake.
