My Alaskan Malamute puppy, Albus (a magician..lol), chewed my 64 gig memory card! There is minimal damage on the outside. I am getting a message that the card cannot be accessed both on the camera and the laptop. Any ideas before I send to one of those expensive data recovery places?

There are only a few gigs of photos on there.

If anyone has used a data recovery service, who was most reasonable.

Thanks,

Amy... pissed off doggie mom!

I hope you have the images saved on your computer of an external drive. I no I'M afraid your image are lost.
All of the recovery software I have heard of or used works with corrupted cards, not card with physical damage.

Memory cards or checks, we still love the dog.

I love my dogs too, however it is my job to keep things out of their reach and the teach them what is allowed and not allowed, just like children.
Unruly and destructive behavior was NOT allowed in my household, my children and pets were not angels, but the children never did the same thing twice or at least didn't get caught at it . The pets, they learned very quickly or found a new home (only happened with one pup). When I saw something that might become a problem I taught the children and trained the dogs. Not perfect but worked very well.

Good Dog! Bergen County Camera has been very successful in recovering data from a card.

Maybe your card is a micro SD embedded in an adapter (some of mine are).

If it is this case, just try to put the micro SD in another adapter... you may be lucky.

If it is an SD card, check that the tiny switch on the side of the card is towards the contacts.

If the switch is in the wrong place it would prevent writing to the card and not reading from it. I am sure the OP is only interested in reading from it and not writing to it any more.

I wish you luck but if physical damage was done, I doubt it can be saved. Actually, once a card has physical damage done to it, I would not insert it into the camera. Who knows what some short circuit or circuit problem could do to the camera or PC.

Many of the cards are a solid state chip with contacts embedded in the chip. That is mounted in the plastic "cover" that you see and handle. If you can get that cover straight enough that the contacts mate up with your reading device then you can download the photos. The switch only controls writing to the card, not reading from it.
If there is damage to the chip inside then you're lost I'd say.

This is like of a last resort idea... risky.

I may not held liable if anything goes wrong, or even if nuclear war is caused by this. :)

If there is minimal outside damage, maybe - just maybe - some dog's saliva entered the card and is shorting some delicate signal leads.

You cloud try to soak the card in distilled water (radiator type, without additives), dry it completely with a hair dryer and then, soak it again in isopropyl alcohol and dry it again, this time without the hair dryer (isopropyl alcohol is combustible)

Use a card reader, and try out some SD card repair software. I just googled this list:

Can anyone say whether an SD card is a watertight package?

To the OP, a friend of mine's dog ate my San Disk card; It was visibly damaged and I wasn't able to retrieve anything from it. I am a college professor, and I felt a bit stupid telling my colleague that I couldn't send her photos of an event because "a dog ate my camera card." (I suppose this will become one of those new excuses).

It sounds like yours might have suffered less damage than mine, so good luck!!!!

I think we should both be glad that the dogs didn't swallow them. It is one of those things I wouldn't necessarily have thought of but it is a good thing to keep these cards away from pets and children.

I have had one sd card go through the washing machine, let it set for about a week and it is still working.
