I always pack my tripod in my carry on and have never had a problem. It is a travel tripod so it fits easily.

That was my understanding, too. I’ve always put them in a small zip bag that I could easily find and pull out of my carry on just in case I had to “gate check” it. No searching through a bag at last minute!

They need to be separated. It could cause a fire if the ends touch.
I would never gate check my camera gear.... tell them you have lots of lithium batteries and they will find a spot on the plane.

We are currently vacationing in Hawaii. I carried tripod, level head, ball head, camera body and two lenses all in my carry on. The spare lithium batteries were in a checked bag, that’s mandatory but the one in the camera body is allowed in your carry on. No issues with TSA or Hawaiian Airlines. Never had a problem with this procedure in the past or this trip.

pesfls I believe if you look at the TSA website, Lithium ion batteries are to be in carry on unless they are in approved fire proof bags. We only travel with carry-on and we have taken up to 12 camera batteries with us in our camera bags. Also, we have carried on travel sized tripods.

Sorry, a little late to the party on this one. Boutique flies small aircraft; King Air 350 and PC-12. I don't think I think all the flights out of Victoria, Texas, are on the King Air. It's pretty limited and here's what their website states: https://www.boutiqueair.com/p/baggage

I'd call them to clarify.

recently on the way back from northeast to FL where we live now I had problems.
I have a portable scale to weigh my bag. It was not working.
So I was 12 lbs over going on JetBlue. I had stripped as much as I could.
I carry a small bag to unload a few lbs at the checkin that wasn't enough.
Coming back I was with family and used an extra carry on bag. Still got
stopped for my wife suitcase and mine. They charged me for one overweight.
$150 each way. I was 4 lbs over coming back. I charged my client the xtra $300
he was not happy about that.
I was amazed that slipped my manfrotto monied into the sleeve on the Tarmac camera bag
no problem. If security was really security would they let stuff like this go by. Hmmm...
I am going to buy the cheap scale that is a hanger to weigh the bags.
We had a lot of stuff we were away for a month.
I always put tripods in my check in luggage. br r... (show quote)

You could probably have saved money by shipping some things ahead to your outbound accommodations/hotel and then back to your home.

I see no reason to carry a tripod onto a plane when you can put it into your checked bag. Maybe if you don't have a checked bag then i would carry it.

I've had tripods on carry on luggage on American Airlines for years and no problem. Hadn't even occurred to me about the "spiked" feet! Don't worry about it!

I've put a tripod in a carry on recently, twice: flight to Logan and a flight to Miami. No problem either time.

Spare (uninstalled) lithium ion and lithium metal batteries must be carried in carry-on baggage only. When a carry-on bag is checked at the gate or at planeside, all spare lithium batteries must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin.

Several years ago I carried a tripod on, on an Alaska flight from Seattle to Santa Fe. No issue. I had a window seat and just slide it under the seat in front of me along with my backpack. My camera bag went into the overhead.

As someone said (sorry I can't remember who), it's not security, it's security theater.

We booked a flight which ends with a commuter flight on Boutique Air. This is for a photo tour, so my tripod is essential. We are limited to one standard carryon and a personal item. In the past I have always packed my tripod in my checked bag. Anyone have any experience whether a tripod will clear security? My recollection is they are not as strict as TSA, but I have to clear TSA on my United portion of the trip. Any comments or sharing of your experience will be appreciated.

Are you going to count that as your personal item or are you going to make it fit in your carryon? It sounds like you can check on bag on the first fight but the commuter has limited space so you won't be able to take very much except for what you can carry.

Stan I don't have the time or inclination to ship gear. I had an AV company and shipping was
not that reliable. I dont need big lights etc take everything I can carry and put some in my checked
luggage. And by the way shipping is very expensive. I have a scale to check before I left and
it was broken. Will buy a new one. Client paid the extra weight cost.

I have taken rifles and pistols as checked luggage, as long as you declare them, they are labeled firearms and are supposedly under the captains scrutiny.
One of our rifle club members, an Olympian, has his rifle case labeled, "Paper perforating machinery".
