As long as they can glide. They even can drop down, start moving their tails and relaunch. It is a response to a threat from larger fish which want to eat them. Their tail fin is longer on the bottom. They are fairly common in tropical and temperate waters. The California flying fish is even caught for bait. One of the entertainments on Cataling Island is a flying fish observation boat ride, usually after dark.

Brings back memories of crossing the Pacific on a Navy Destroyer. The deck guys had to sweep them off the deck every morning. Nice capture!

They go out after dark to guarantee finding them. Fish at night are attracted by lights on the boat.
