Sorry, I wasn't remembering correctly, it was a very long time ago. Actually, now that you said that, it was the HD in my computer and not a backup at all, at that time maybe 20 years ago, I never thought of having an EHD backup. Lesson learned.

Ouch!

2 Western Digital mirrored external drives plus cloud backup should do the trick for you.

I have two WD Passport Ultras. I would have no problem getting another (or two) in a larger capacity.
(Mine fit in a shirt pocket too. I refer to them as "pocket drives".)

(BTW - EHD is short for Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. No one I know uses it to refer to an external hard drive. That would be like me using WE for Windows Explorer because I don't want to type it out. Nobody knows what WE would be, other than a cable TV channel. )

Love it. He does seem to enjoy using; EHD

Well, that's how new mnemonics get started.
I saw that Carbonite uses EHD also.
Me? I type out non-common/standard "mnemonics" ...

(Still would love to use WE instead of typing it all. )

If a SSD fail you a 0% chance to recover any thing.

I back up on 2 separate drives. I had one fail and nomrecocery.

I now use HGST Ultrastar internal drives, and I put them in enclosures for external use. The Ultrastar is an enterprise drive, designed for 24/7 use. Refurbished drives are available for very good prices. I've been using these for years.

Both local and cloud are the only way to go.

Thanks. Have two drives on my PC, one of which is SSD. I know it helps with very quick startup and shutdown. I keep programs there, but I've been told it's not good for archival file storage for the long term. (It's also pretty small.) What would the advantage of an SSD EHD be? No moving parts so might last longer? I've had my current EHD since 2013, so I'm not really worried about how quickly a new EHD might fail. And portability not something I care about at all in this context.

Redundant backups are the key to security of data. I have three internal drives. SSD for OS and two other data drives. I backup up using Acronis, but Windows works too. I have 4 external drives for backup. I have redundant backups to different external drives for each internal drive. I had an internal "photo" drive develop a few bad sectors. I was not aware of the issue. I did have it backed up, but since the drive had errors, the backup was not validated. I lost thousands of images. Since that fiasco, I have redundant backups. You should be able to configure different backup schemes to different externals. If not, consider Acronis. It's only $30 and is a permanent license. Great tech support too. I've used it for 15+ years.

Good luck,
Mark

Hi Hogs,

Just thought I’d ask for some quick advice on replacing my external hard drive. I’m almost out of space on my current EHD, plus it’s pretty old. So I want a new one, with greater capacity. (Current one has less capacity that my PC’s drives.) Couple of quick questions.

My current EHD is a WD Passport. It’s been fine, so I thought I’d buy another Passport. Any thoughts on these models? Other models I could consider?

I use Windows to back up to my EHD, on a weekly basis. When I install the new EHD, should I delete the current backup scheme in Windows, and start over and create a new one? Or if I just swap out my old and new EHDs, will the existing backup scheme keep working? (Obviously, the initial back would be everything, so it would take hours.)

Thank you.

I used to have two external hard drives, one I used for external storage and retrieval, and the other to backup that one. Both were 4TB drives. They were both almost full so I had to decide what direction I wanted to go when they do get full. So I decided to go a slightly different route this time. I purchased a new internal 8TB 7200 rpm drive and copied all the contents from one of the 4TB drives to that. Then I purchased a new EHD that is the same size, (8TB) and copied the contents of the new IHD to that. So they both have 4TB of my data on them, and now my 8TB EHD backs up my IHD. I did it this way because the IHD is much faster in instances where I need to retrieve an old picture and do anything with it. The old 4TB EHD's were always sleeping and slow and whenever I needed an old picture file I had to wait for the computer to wake up the EHD, then access it, then wait for a slow search for the file, then wait for the picture to render, etc.... It was slow and really annoying to me so now when I need to search for an old file it's accessible from in internal drive that has a much faster interface with the computer. I'm very pleased with this configuration. I took both of the 4TB EHD's and achieved them into my gun safe.

I would suggest you take a look at a SSD drive. No moving parts and sizes up into the Terra byte range. The one I bought fits easily into a shirt pocket.

Yes SSDs are very affordable now and very fast. The speed is very noticeable and that is an understatement. Can’t go wrong there.

Go on to Ebay and buy a few internal cheap hard drives, then buy a lead to fit HDD's to USB, you don't need a case really, although they are very cheap, I have five of these so if one fails. there's not a real problem.

I purchased a 8TB WD drive it took 3 days to backup al my files. Choose carefully as this will take a while and you do not want to do it twice...

BTW the WD drive is problem free and I am happy with it.

What was your backup procedure?

I use an app called SyncToy. It's free from Microsoft. When I installed my 8TB internal drive it took a day and a half to copy almost 4TB of data from my old external. Then I installed a new external 8TB drive and it took almost 3 days to copy or backup the internal drive to that external drive.

I am presently using a Thunderbolt 3 system from LaCie which is now owned by Seagate and contains reliable Seagate drives. Mine has two 8GB drives in RAID 1. It's been fast and solid. Best of luck.

I'm using G-Technology drives for both primary image storage and one for backup.
