Larry … it would seem to me - a tele-zoom - with a 2.5:1 ratio, as opposed to one with a 4:1 ratio - would surpass the other, fluorite, or no fluorite … would / should - it not?
Fluorite is a great advantage ! .....so is $600 added to the price ....and, made in Japan instead of China.
Technology has advanced to where ratio has a lesser impact - look at the 60-600 Sigma !

Whether a lens (or, a camera) is made in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, or Timbuctoo - has no relation on this argument at all, Larry.
We've already done that debate … all Sony SLTs and all Nikons - are made in Thailand - didn't you know?
And the answer, there - is there's no discernible difference in quality - wherever a camera (or optic) is made.
I WILL look at the 60-600 Sigma, now, you've brought it up. But, the 50-500 is much more affordable …

Made in Japan BTW...

Thanks, Larry … but, it dropped out … no loss - I don't really care what Ken Rockwell says about ANYTHING - anyway … there must be more reliable reviews out there ….
All Sigma glass is made in Japan … that's no news to me … wish everyone else's glass was, too …

Not unusual for you to be wrong Chris. Not all Nikon cameras are made in Thailand. Some are made in Japan. Do your research! Although you will probably, conveniently, lose your connection while searching for the truth. But then again what does that matter.

Did my research, Bill … and eight of my DSLRs - ALL come from Thailand - all five of my Nikons, and all three of my Sony SLTs … of the others - two of the Canons come from Japan, and the other one - Taiwan.
The remaining one - the Pentax - was made in the Philippines. As for cameras I DON'T own - I do know the Df is made in Japan. I don't know about the others, because I haven't been interested enough to look into it.

... all Nikons - are made in Thailand - didn't you know?So why would you make a BS statement like this?

So you meant to say "all MY Nikons are made in Thailand -- didn't you know?" Is that right?
If so, how would anyone else know where YOUR Nikons were made?
Also, I've read that Sony SLT's are made in Japan. Not so?

Yes, that's right … all of the Nikons I own - the D7100, D7000, D5500, D5300, and D3200 are all made in Thailand … so are both my Nikon lenses - the 18-55 VR which came with the D3200, AND the 16-85 VR I bought later. This is ALSO the case with my three Sony SLTS - the a77, the a77 II, and the a58. However, all three of my Sony lenses - the 18-55 SAM II which came with the a58, and the 16-105 DT, and 18-250 DT - I bought after I bought those bodies, are all made in Japan, J. And so are all my Sigma lenses - including all the ones I bought for my Nikon bodies, and the 105 Macro I bought for my Sony a77 II.
It's possible the a99 and a99 II FF SLTs are made in Japan - I really don't know, but the APS-C SLTs I own - all come from Thailand - just like all the DX bodies I have. There, now, J - did I cover it all?
