Another good one, but slightly more expensive than the FZ80 is the Nikon B700. Specs are similar, but it has a longer zoom.

I believe the zoom is the same on both those models. The Lumix FZ80 has a 60X optical zoom, and the Nikon B700 also has a 60X optical Zoom, but has been discontinued. The Nikon P900 would be an option, especially for birds, but it doesn't shoot RAW.

B&H Photo says the Nikon B700 has been replaced by the Nikon Coolpix A900. I have been considering a Nikon Coolpix P1000.
Thanks!

One comment by owners of the P1000 is that it is large and heavy. However, pictures posted seem quite sharp even at nearly full zoom. The zoom capability is truly impressive, especially for birds and other wildlife.

My Lumix FX70 disappeared last year somewhere between Tucson and Albuquerque. Sad.

I have a couple of upcoming trips, the most fun one being to parts of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and to St. Petersburg Russia.

So, I need a smallish camera that will work with this upcoming cities trip but also be good for shooting birds, flowers, plants, landscapes. Budget is under $1500.

Looked at the current Lumix FX series, a Nikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital Camera Deluxe Kit, and a compact Leica V-LUX (Typ 114) Digital Camera. (And MANY others!)

History, I started out with a Minolta many, many years ago, upgraded to a regular Nikon multilens favorite camera, then a Canon digital, then the Lumix about 3 years ago. I love Nikon optics, but can I afford a Nikon digital (even fixed lens) that will work for this trip but also my week-in, week-out photography needs.

We will be traveling in some very small planes during parts of the trip.

Hints? Suggestions?

Thanks, Kathy

I am sure everyone here will give you their favorite camera's. I travel a lot now that I am retired and I like to put my camera in a belt pouch so I can walk and not worry about a camera. When I want to take a shot I simply take it out of the pouch and shoot. For me, I like a camera with an extended range cause you run into different things when you travel. My favorite is the Sony HX-99V,(about $450.00) it has a built in viewfinder, nice for outside shooting, a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, built in flash, HDR, and shoots RAW if you want.
Below are a few grab shots taken with this camera. The first shot is taken at 24mm with the back screen flipped up so I could put the camera close to the ground, the second was taken at 700mm of a small village along the Rhine River. TRAVEL RIGHT, TRAVEL LITE.

I had the FZ80 and was unimpressed.
The Sony RX10 is my recommendation
https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/sony_cyber-shot_dsc-rx10.html

If too expensive Fuji XT20 - $699 w/kit lens or Olympus OMD-E-M10 Mark III with 2 kit lenses

Take care,

For travel I leave my D7200 home and carry a Lumix FZ1000 and ZS100. I primarily use the FZ1000 but have the ZS100 as backup and when I need to go lighter. The ZS100 also has a viewfinder and both shoot RAW. Both have a 1" sensor.

As others have written, if you want the best bridge camera, go with the Sony RX10 IV... It came out at $1700, but several stores are now listing it within your price range.

As others have recommended if you want to stay small like the Lumix go with the sony r100iv much larger sensor. Basically the same sensor used in the rx10 series cameras but in a much small form factor.

Take a look at the new Fujifilm XT-30. It's a slightly scaled down version of the X-T3, which is an awesome camera, and should produce amazing results. I love Fuji colors straight out of the camera. Good luck with your decision...and enjoy your travels!

Up your budget just a tad and buy the Sony RX10 M4. The best bridge camera you can buy but not real small. Read the reviews compared to the other cameras you listed. You’ll be Surprised!

Take a look at the Fuji XT-30 with the 18-55 lens. You won't regret it!

If you want to save some money Jdub82, you can get almost the same camera as the Sony RX10 (the one recomended here), like Lumix FZ1000 ($600) or FZ1000 II ($897) or Lumix FZ2500 ($997)
Larger sensor cameras, Leica designed zooms with fully swivelling screens for low angle photography.
On my travels where I have to carry my cameras, everything is done on the move and any longer zoom than 400mm without a tripod is not realistic. No lens changing.

Stick with the Lumix. Ypu know it already. If you really like the Leica just find the Lumix equivalent (I think the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ1000 II is close). Underneath they are the same camera and much less expensive.
