I live in Socal. On my roof I can see the flare stacks from 4 refineries.
I went to Phoenix recently. California gas gets trucked there, and is @ $1 cheaper.
I went to Lake Havasu. Drove. Every so often the route crossed state lines. Boom! $.75 cheaper.
We have "cells". A group of stations will have very similar prices. Same brands, 2 miles farther from the freeway- a quarter cheaper. Parts of Orange County you need to get off the freeway, drive a bit and get back on another. In between are "super stations"- @ $.50 cheaper.
We were actually warned by some newsies of this in the LAX area. Groups of managers are bumping up prices to get us ready for holiday fuel prices. Maybe some respite in between holidays, but we're kinda screwed until after 7/4/19.
Ya gotta look around- brand "loyalty" is meaningless. Keep track of prices, and reward the better ones.
My wife tells me that at this point, some differences are insignificant. 20 cents difference? That;s what- 2 dollars on a $40 fillup? Still, it's the principle...
Yeah, um no. Second hand hay. br I live in Socal. ... (show quote)

How old are those refineries?

If y'all remember not too long ago, gas was $4.00+ per gallon. These images were accumulated at that time. History has a tendency to repeat itself...so perhaps we shall see that magic number again.

Williamsport is 2.85 a gallon and I am sure other places are much cheaper.

Tis a bit more pricier than our closest American pumps in Northern Michigan. The last time I gassed up there they were asking $2.77.

Is it possible the good economy means more fuel being used and the real bottleneck is a complete lack of refineries that can keep up with demand? Plenty of crude but lack of production capacity.

That is true here in CA. The state requires special blends by season and the refineries have to do the change over ($), then we have shut downs for maintenance (the plants are getting old) and the state will not allow new refineries or expansion. Then a couple of the biggest ones had fires and other damage caused by the breakdown of old equipment. It got so bad that a few refineries in other countries started making small amounts of CA approved gas, very small amounts. Only two refineries outside the state produce gas that meets CA standards all year, one in Texas and one in Finland of all places. The imported gas is of course more expensive due to transport costs. Only 6% of gas in the US is from other countries, almost all of it in CA. Overall the US exports gas and other petroleum products. For a couple of special grades of crude the US does do a swap with producers around the world. Our crude that meets their standards for their crude that meets the specialty standards. But if we changed a few things (mostly in CA) we would not need to import any gas or crude except for Canadian Crude and those specially grades and would be exporting it as both crude and refined product. As it is the US is the largest exporter of petroleum. If we increased production and sold more to Europe we would bankrupt Russia because their economy is so dependent on petroleum sales to Western Europe.

Ron, I don’t know where you are located in Canada, but the pricing you quote in your post have not been available here in British Columbia for at least the last 6 months! Are you located in Alberta? I know gas is cheap in Alberta compared to the rest of Canada.

We're way east of you in Northern Ontario. Every time I see a story of BC gas prices I cringe as I know sooner than later we will probably catch up to you. And now friendly Alberta wants to shut off your taps to the pumps. Sure is nice to have good neighbors right. 😬😜😵
Actually we are a bit lucky here as we are what is called a " border city ", right across the river/border from Soo Michigan. When I filled up there last Tuesday the price for regular was $2.77 USD, which with exchange equates to $0.98 CD a litre. However you have to add the $10 CD bridge toll to the fillup. Sometimes a small tank means the cost plus time doesn't really make the trip feasible. But a vehicle with a fairly large tank and a 1/2 dozen gas cans in the trunk does make a helluva difference. (Been there, done that many times. For example last time over 60 litres in car and 100 in cans. Cost in CD was $157 plus $10 bridge. Equivalent cost at Canadian pumps was $195 for a savings of $28 making it in my opinion worth the trip )

After getting married in 1965, we drove to our apartment in Saratoga Springs, NY where they were having a “gas war” (one or more stations would lower their prices in an attempt to drive out or bankrupt one or more other stations). Regular gas was $0.17(!) a gallon. Quite a change.

I’m one of those lucky individuals that have a vehicle with a highly efficient engine and a turbocharger to boost the power when needed. Unfortunately it requires top tier fuel and that has been in and over the $4 range for some time here in SoCal. The funny part is that if I drive from Palm Springs to just the other side of the Arizona State line, gas is a dollar a gallon cheaper. Go figure.

I gassed up in Yuma, AZ and parked next to me at the station was a pickup with CA plates. The guy had pumped 200 gal into tanks in the bed of the pickup. Said he was from El Centro and he saved just over $1.00 a gallon. Also said it took about an hour to pump that much gas.

Will you all stop your bitching. Our price is currently $5.80/gal with the govt working out ways to make it even higher (all currency exchange differences adjusted for and making allowance for your weird sized gallon).
You Americans live in one of the cheapest countries in the world and you still complain.

Why is the cost of gas so high when oil is $64/barrel? Oil is still cheap. There was a time when it was $200/barrel. Why are we paying through the nose for gas when we've done everything to bring the price of oil down?

Steve, I don't want to defend the current price of gas, but there are a lot of costs between the price of crude pumped pout of the ground and your fuel tank. ie. shipping, inventory, refining into several different grades, more shipping to the station where you buy it, the gas station's cost of the fuel, rent of the station (or taxe on the land if he/she owns it, cost of inventory, payroll and taxes paid on the payroll, and Fed and State income taxes! Most stations make about +/- $0.03 per gallon gross; all the costs are paid out of that $0.03. I haven't even included the costs of locating and drilling paid before the crude is pumped. The owner is also probably working a six or seven or day week with probably no overtime for the owner. Would you work and risk your money for that little return? You really owe him his small return!

What have you done in Kalifornia to bring the price of gasoline down?

Voted for more Liberal left wing socialist Democrats in Sacramento?
No new refineries in My Back Yard?
Expensive Gasoline blends to satisfy the Liberal Green Dems?
No out of state gasoline supply?
funded the High Speed Train to nowhere?
Reduced gasoline taxes?
Used gasoline taxes for road maintenance?
Sanctuary Cities and State?
Open borders?
Legalize mj?
Reduced Kalifornia taxes?
There seems to be no end to this Tax and Spend State of Kalifornia
The only attribute is the climate.

Your looking in the wrong direction for the problem,
It is not Big Oil, but Sacramento Tax and Spend Dems
Why is the State tax more than Big Oil profit?

You have got that wrong AGAIN!!
It's not Big Oil, but Sacramento that is the problem.
Texas is a growing oil producer, exporting crude oil and products.
California was once the number one oil producing State but the Sacramento liberals took over/
I suspect that you support them.
