I'm seeking guidance for photo opps in Portland, Maine and vicinity.
I'm focused on landscape photography and have only a couple of days to visit so would like to get to the best vantage points.
Any suggestions for known places to get great landscape shots in Portland (and perhaps on the way up from the Boston area) would be greatly appreciated.

I agree----but be certain to shoot it from both sides. Shoot it early morning or at sunset.

The Portland Head Lighthouse in South Portland is the most iconic spot to photograph. You can have a lot of fun and get some great photos by walking around the Old Port area and then taking the ferry out to Peak's Island for lunch. A nice round-trip will take about 3-4 hours - check the ferry schedule. The last time I was there you could find two or three restaurants near the ferry dock on Peak's. They might not all be open yet. If not, there are dozens of restaurants in the Old Port. Wear something warm - it will be cold on the water (you can ride inside the ferry, but what is the fun in that?!)

A stop on the way to Portland could be Nubble Light in York Beach, ME. Very photographic lighthouse. Also Porpoise Harbor near Kennebunkport, ME. Nice harbor shots are possible.

On the way to the Portland Head Light, if you’re coming from Portland is a bakery, The Cookie Jar, that is worth visiting for coffee and ... snacks. Further down the road is Two Lights State Park. If you’re looking for Lobster in the rough, I can’t recommend The Lobster Shack highly enough. Great photo ops in the restaurant and outside. And the lobster is great! If lobster isn’t your thing they have other options as well. It is also a BYO beer and wine. Do stop in Kennebunkport on the way up to Portland and take the shore route north. Still working backwards, Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, NH is a historic, restored village that is well worth the visit with plenty of photo ops.

The South Portland Head Light is numero uno. It is the most photographed lighthouse in the world and I have even heard that some photo contests ban images of it because they've seen too many. Sunrise or sunset is a must. Try the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. Also in Kennebunkport is the Bush (as in Presidents Bush) compound, but you'll need a telephoto lens. In Kittery, right at the Maine-New Hampshire border there is the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. I've never tried it, but you might get something there. There's the Cliff Walk in York Harbor. I suggest that you get off of I-95 ASAP and head toward Portland on US1. When you see something promising to your right (toward the ocean) just mosey on over. If you've got the time and the stamina to get yourself northeast of Portland on US1 you will arrive in God's country. Boothbay Harbor is a particularly attractive artist's colony.

Portland Harbor piers (commercial fishing boats etc.). Ferry to Casco Bay islands. https://www.cascobaylines.com/

Two great (and somewhat less well known) sites are Wolf's Head Woods State Park in Freeport, and Owl's Head State Park outside Rockland. Freeport is 15-20 minutes north of Portland, Rockland is about an hour, but it's where you first really encounter the iconic "rocky" feel of the Maine coast.

You can google "Maine lighthouses" and will see other lighthouses that you might include in your itinerary. Nubble Light in York is a recommended addition. Coming up from Boston, you might consider stopping at Newburyport for scenic views along the Merrimack River. You could also travel to the mouth of the river in Plum Island. Another possible stop in York, Maine is Mt Agamenticus. You can drive to the top for scenic views (including, weather permitting, Mount Washington) and, if desired, take a short hike from there.
