Success buying photo gear on Craigslist??

Unlike others, I've had great success buying on CL. I do make private contact with seller and negogiate the deal. Many times, at sellers request have met in a public location. The last time was in the parking lot of the the local police station.
Another time, we could not work out a time/meet as he was out of state. He left the items (20 4x5 film holders) in a spot on his property and I left the cash in envelope in the same spot. Worked well.

I have had a couple of good experiences on CL, but it is not my preferred way to buy camera gear.

I've had mostly good experiences, with some hiccups and slightly unnerving experiences. I was on the 'other' end of the situation you had. I bought a lens off a guy, and the arrangement was to meet him at his house. I was making the purchase and he said, laughingly, that it's a good thing I got there so quickly because another person was on his way to buy the same lens! I felt terrible about that, and thought later that I should have just walked away from it.
When I sell stuff (and I have done so several times), I try to be above and beyond honest and clear about what they are buying, warts and all. I guess the message here overall is that you takes your chances with CL.

As a matter of fact, I just finished a great transaction on Craig's List this afternoon.
Seller had listed a Nikon F100 with the power grip, but missing the body's battery door. The back had some stickiness to it (a known problem), a 35-105 AF-D zoom, decent Lowepro bag, and Magic Lantern Guide, for the princely sum of $210. I examined closely after loading batteries, and everything worked perfectly on a dry run. I paid him the $210, and I'm sure that I got the deal I wanted.
Now, for the bonus. He also asked me if I'd be interested in a like new Canon AE-1 Program, with a 50mm f/1.8. Price? - $50. Couldn't pay for that one quickly enough. It meters and works perfectly.
As with others, it's strictly caveat emptor. We met in the very public parking lot of a 7-Eleven not far from my home.
Two happy campers all around.
