The authorities are now saying that the structure is sound, and pledging that it will be rebuilt. We can certainly hope so.

President Macron is hoping to rebuild it "even more beautiful" in five years; experts had been predicting ten to fifteen years. Each is much faster than I had expected - I guess it depends on how many people they are willing to put on the task, and what methods they will use {for example, CNN is reporting France doesn't have trees the size that were originally used - so they will either have to use smaller trees or import them from somewhere}

Most of the posts used in supporting the roof were made from whole trees.
Thus, that area was called the forest.

We were in Paris two years ago and spent some time in this magnificent edifice, and quiet a lot of time shooting the periphery. A dramatically stunning building that hopefully can be restored to near its past beauty. We will be back in July and I hope to see some progress.

Estimated cost to rebuild the Cathedral is $8-10 billion dollars. That can be accomplished. A little more than I expected though. But we are in the 21st Century now. And nothing is cheap anymore.

How are you so sure that it wasn't a terrorist set fire? They have not done an investigation yet and in the recent past there have been over a dozen other churches burned in Paris and some were by Islamic terrorist!

I believe most people aren't sure of anything and little opportunity to determine anything - but there is no reason to postulate 'terrorist' .... one could just as reasonably blame 'little green men'.

OMG! The most revered catholic church after the St. Peter's Basilica. So many history happened at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. One of the must-see places not only in Paris but the whole of France. We were there in 2015. Had solemn memories of the Notre Dame Cathedral. A magnificent icon of France. A big loss. I am terribly sad; virtually in tears.

A few photos of Notre Dame during our visit and some historical facts:

I seem to remember that Henry 4 had purchased the crown of thorns....

I hope a small cadre of photographers will begin collecting interior and exterior pictures of Cathedral detail for the guidance of the reconstructors. Having upwards of 70,000 members the UHH is a suitable place to begin. Could the Administrator create a special Notre Dame Rebuild forum for photo storage?

My mind has turned to how did it start. Was there welding going on and sparks fell onto dried wood. Why didn’t the contractor have fire suppressant capability. Did a worker toss a cigarette butt? If you are doing restoration work on wood why would you need fire-anything.

There you go, John....I thought of welding and cutting too, spent my life as a shipbuilder.

This is so painful to witness and I am told that no water was used as they attempted to rescue artworks from below the flames .The weight of the water would collapse the structure in on the rescuers and firemen inside. It will be a total loss by midnight I suspect.

I'm not Catholic nor French but I am crying over it anyway........ huge death in the world family it truly is.
I hope all Americans will donate funds to resurrect it soon. We wouldn't be here were it not for the French in earlier times . It is the very least we can do. What a shame this really is. Wow !

Your source of information was mistaken about the no water used as there are photos of the fire brigade using water cannons mounted on crane trucks to get the water as high up as possible.
They did however rule out ariel water drops to prevent collapse. An easy mistake though.

I wonder if it will be reconstructed? I'm sure that someone somewhere will start up a fund to rebuild. So very sad to lose such a priceless work of art and history.

Truly an epic loss! Even if it is rebuilt it can’t be replaced.

Somebodies, namely famous French Billionaires, have already pledged millions of dollars towards reconstruction

They are also receiving smaller donations.
For example, the area where I live was originally settled by French fur traders, followed by a French priest who started a local college - which has grown into a rather successful university. Today they announced a gift also - Notre Dame University is donating $100,000 to rebuilding Notre Dame Cathedral.

The news has already warned to be sure who you donate to- scammers are already setting up fake Notre Dame charities.
