As the general public would say (which drives photographers crazy)
"You must have a great camera"!
It's like telling a great painter, "You must have excellent brushes"!

LOL Robert! I think when you get into 300mm prime lenses, lens extenders and full-frame cameras, one does have to allow there is an aspect of "the equipment" that is involved for this type of photography. Of course, you can't just point the lens at the birds and come away with these results. Looking at the timestamps, I spent just over 2-hours around the eagles during a full day at the Brevard Zoo. I have 10 keepers in my LR catalog for these birds after culling and editing. Thank you for your comment and interest.

Paul, nice post as always. If you ever find your way up the Mississippi to the Twin Cities, you may want to consider a stop at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha Minnesota. A great place to learn all about the birds. Thanks for your posts.

Thank you for the heads up williejoha! I haven't been up to the Twin Cities area now in a few years. I'll add Wabasha to the list when I do get there again.

Love these beautiful portraits of our country's bird. A great set. Just one question -- how did you get them to come into your studio and sit so that you could take their portrait? Mahalo for sharing.

Thank you JoAnneK01! While watching these birds, at least one has recovered from an injury that was so severe, they have no flight ability at all and can move around only by walking / jumping. I watched one jump between branches in a tree, miss at a branch too far away and go tumbling down to the ground. The boardwalk of the Brevard Zoo through their exhibit is open air as the birds cannot leave and you can achieve a nearness with no barriers that might seem like a studio. Glad you enjoyed.

Those four Eagle shots were absolute perfection. I am in awe, and it spurs me on that maybe..just maybe I would be able to take a photo like that some day. I'm listening to everything you have to say, because I know...and other's have told me..that..you are very knowledgeable, and know what your talking about, and after seeing those Eagle photo's...I knew what they meant.

Do you or Alan Meyers have any youtube video's I could watch? (Not that I'm not on overload already).

Kay

Thank you Kay! If I'm following your posts correctly, you have an EOS Rebel SL1 in route. As I said in another post, you can't just point the lens at the birds and come away with anything near these results. But, with practice, patience and a lens that can reach to 300mm, yes with your SL1, you will have the equipment to potentially capture images similar to these close-ups, particularly in well-lit situations.

Awesome, thanks for this. We have several pairs here in NW Nevada/eastern California area (roughly Reno to Mono Lake) that I know of. Last fall, I was fortunate to happen upon one perched high above me and grab a few snaps. They are magnificent creatures.

Thank you Desert Gecko! Hopefully, eagles will continue to expand and return to their full range across all of North American and zoos and remote locations will not be the only way to see them.

Thank you Bev, sunsetsabunch, Stash, Sam, Fotoartist, woodweasel, Bertk, Froggy, bleirer, mdpathjp, DebAnn, Raymondh, Kay, Michael, Jeff D, pila! Thank you for your kind comments and interest. I visited the Brevard Zoo in north Melbourne very much on a whim with no prior research other than confirming it was along my route back north out of Florida. Their exhibits of native Florida wildlife, including these rescue eagles, were all excellent.

Kaowdo. The eagle pictures I posted was not thru a plexiglass window. Other animals at the Brevard Zoo are though. What I was referring to was the Jaquars & Merkats. Another two which is new is the black bear & Kimono Dragon. Most of the other animals at the zoo are out in the open. You can feed the giraffes & brush the backs of the Rhinos. On the train ride you can see other animals that are not in cages such as a few camels. Brevard Zoo isn't big but it's a great place to visit as is the Zoo Miami.

I found the link that said 'Bald Eagle Close-Ups', but the photo's were not there. Could you please tell me how I can find those photo's? Is it OK...if I email them to her?

OK, then how were these taken, if not point and shoot? Tripod, then moving a bunch of buttons on your camera, then waiting? Approx..how far away in feet were you when you took these eagle pictures? Yes your following me correctly, I'm getting a SL1.

The Bald Eagle dwarfs most other raptors, including the Turkey Vulture and Red-tailed Hawk. It has a heavy body, large head, and long, hooked bill. In flight, a Bald Eagle holds its broad wings flat like a board. Bald eagles can see four times better than a human with perfect vision.

The bald eagle is important in various Native American cultures and is the national bird of the United States since 1782. The eagle is prominent in seals and logos, coinage, postage stamps, and other items relating to the U.S. federal government. The regal bird isn't really bald, their white-feathered heads gleam in contrast to their chocolate-brown body and wings.

Following the banning of DDT, the numbers of wild Bald Eagles gradually increased since the 1970s, with spectacular recoveries in some states. Big concentrations can be found wintering along rivers or reservoirs in many areas. In 2007, the bald eagle was officially removed from the federal Endangered Species list. Current populations are estimated at 10,000 pairs in the continental U.S.

The images shared in this post come from Miami and Brevard Zoos in Florida in November 2018. All come from an EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II, EF Extender 1.4x III and EOS 5DIII. The images were captured in RAW and processed using Adobe Lightroom and Topaz DeNoise v6

The largest Bald Eagle nest on record, in St. Petersburg, Florida, was 2.9 meters in diameter and 6.1 meters tall. Another famous nest—in Vermilion, Ohio—was shaped like a wine glass and weighed almost two metric tons. It was used for 34 years until the tree blew down.

Many zoos exhibit eagles that were severely wounded in the wild. For example, none of the three eagles at the Brevard Zoo could survive in the wild due to the extent of their injuries leaving them permanently handicapped and no longer able to fly.

The eagles shown here from the Miami and Brevard Zoos in Florida were captured using an EOS 5DIII, EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II and Extender 1.4III. The images are sized to fill your wide-screen display. Thank you loperR, Merrytexan! The exhibit of the eagles really helps for close ups as they do at Miami too. Glad you enjoyed.
