It appears that Nikon has a problem as explained here with DOF. https://fstoppers.com/gear/nikon-needs-fix-depth-field-problem-z-6-and-z-7-356457

There isn't any "depth of field problem" with those cameras. There is a relatively minor firmware issue involving the use of live view zoomed to 100% at apertures smaller than f/5.6 when using manual focus.

In reality it is a non-issue. If you're shooting a landscape and want to use f/11, live view will not show you depth of field beyond f/5.6. If however you know your DOF charts or have a DOF ap on your smart phone you won't really need to "see" DOF in that tiny image will you? My Nikon cameras back in film days had a preview button and at anything smaller than f/8 or so it was too dark to really tell what was and what wasn't in sharp focus. You trusted your experience and education (or your notes) more than your eyes.
Some people need to find things to carp about or their days are never complete.

Henry Hudson reports it as a DOF issue, and a problem for his type of photography. He also states that this does not occur on the DSLR's so a firmware update may fix it. Either way it seems like a bug even if in live view.

I still think of it as a non issue since 35mm photographers, for one heck of a long time, have worked out the DOF without having to actually see it before squeezing the shutter release.

Only a problem for those who do not understand the principles involved. There are innumerable ways to circumvent the "non-problem". The only real problem here is that there are those who believe all the trash that is published on-line by those who just want to sell advertising because they can't make a living otherwise.

PS: How did all those range finder users ever manage to get good DOF without a preview button?

Funny, My Z7 with a Leica mf lens seems to do this okay. I can start at f5.6 and focus on something near, and open up to f16 and watch the distance get sharper in the rear screen. I don't have the front button programmed to 100%, but I can use the + button on the back to enlarge.

Maybe I don't understand the complaint.

In the video I also noticed that his focus assist (on mine, its red) did not seem to be working. I rely on that a lot to verify DoF.

It isn't an issue for any type of photography, but rather it is an issue for his preferred idiosyncratic method. It would annoy me, too, were I in the same situation.

Again, there is no depth of field issue with the camera.

I am of the “no big deal” crowd. Nikon has more substantial fixes to make on the Zs.

The one that bothers me most is that the focus point wanders around and needs to be repositioned for each image. Perhaps more important is that Nikon prohibits senser cleaning but leaves the shutter open when off so dust accumulates on the sensor.

Also I’m not sure the “clean when turned off” control works. When you “clean now” there is a delay and a click. They don’t happen on shutdown. Plus the icon says off when it is allegedly on.

How does Nikon manage to prohibit sensor cleaning?
If the shutter is open but a lens or body cap is on the camera, how does dust get to the sensor?

They tell you it will damage the sensor. And of course void warranty.

Dust gets on the sensor when changing lenses.

Have you had a dust problem yet with your camera? Are there many distracting spots on your images?

Yes, despite carefully changing lenses away from wind and dust, keeping camera body faced down, and using a rocket blower as recommended.

In addition to not closing the shutter when you turn the camera off I suspect the sensor stays charged a while after shutdown, and thus functions as a dust magnet.

You only see the spots with high fstops. Alas, I do landscapes so usually use high fstops (16 and 22).

Don’t tell Nikon, but I also used my Arctic Butterfly. It worked best. But still have some spots.

Wow. I would expect some dust as a normal thing, but enough to cause a problem, no. Are you using a zoom (aka bellows)?
If you're having that much of a problem I doubt a close shutter would solve the problem. When you change a lens dust will settle inside the cavity and tend to move around whenever the shutter actuates.
Do you live in Kansas or maybe the Texas pan handle? Mercy!
(yeah, I know ID. Rhetorical question)
