Does anyone know anything about the status of production on this lens? Is there some problem, or is it just the volume of orders causing the delay. Any idea of what the lag time is between order and receipt?

They have been coming slowly. I have been getting one every 5-6 weeks.
Still have 5 customers waiting for them so expect a LONG wait if you haven't already pre-ordered one.

PF lens production is slow and specialized.

Plus the lens is FANTASTIC at a great price creating huge worldwide demand. There is simply nothing even close to it at any price from any other manufacturer. I actually had a Canon customer trade in his 5DSR and lenses for a D850 just so he could buy and use this lens. Still have that Canon in the store.

Got mine about 5 months ago from B&H, love it well worth the wait.

Be aware that MT shooter will not mail out this lens. I contacted him several months ago and he told me personally that he would not send the lens to me. He informed me I had to drive to his business to buy it.
So I called Nikon Professional Services ( I am a member) and told them I had one on order through B&H and was still on the waiting list. Nikon Professional Services told me that they would send the lens to B&H and that B&H would forward the lens to me, which they did in early December.
From what Nikon tells me, the lens is super popular and they are keeping the production down to assure quality.
Trust me, this lens is worth waiting for. I did a review of the lens here and you should be able to find it.
I have owned the 300 2.8, 200-400 4, 500 4, and the 600 4. I am getting to the age I needed something lighter to carry around. So I now mount the new 500 5.6 on my D850. WOW. I cannot describe the quality results of this lens.
Keep on waiting and you will eventually get one. Remember Nikon is filling orders they get from around the world, so, stay the course and you will be rewarded.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely wait. I am in the same position, 76, and want to pair this lens with my D850. I will look for your review.

I just asked a friend who I trust whether 500mm was too long without being part of a zoom. He said it was. He uses a Sigma 150-600 for his safaris. I've been tempted to get this lens in order to have a long prime. It's build vs. the 200-500 is outstanding. I'd love to shoot wildlife on a fullframe with a lens like this. I'd like to get your perspective.

I realize that since I don't have the 500 pf yet that I can't fully answer your question. However, I do have the Sigma 150-600, which I use on both a Nikon D850 and 500. I have found this lens to be acceptable to use for wildlife if there is fairly strong light. If the light is not great, as in early morning or late evening, the focus quality is definitely compromised, especially with the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter. This limitation also applies to subjects in shady situations. From what I have heard and read, the 500 pf would solve this problem, although it's use for shorter range subjects would be limited.

Why use a fixed 500mm lens?

It all depends on what your subject matter is. If most of what you are trying to capture is fairly far away, then the prime lens will give you sharper focus than a zoom. The weather proofing is also usually better. In addition, this 500mm PF is shorter and lighter than any zoom or prime that is currently available. If you are walking with your camera for any distance, and for hand held shooting, this is a big advantage.

I shoot the 500 5.6 with the D500 and the D850. The D850 is the clear winner in my opinion. The D850 seems to do magical things with the 500 5.6. I find myself using the D850 more and more with the 500 5.6 lens attached.
That said I still like using my Nikon 200-500 on the D500. I have been using the 200-500 since it came out and find it capturing great images. Even at 10 frames a second thanks to the electronic aperture. It delivers rock solid sharp images throughout it's zoom range.
And yes, it is heavier than the 500 5.6 but it is still manageable.
I use both rigs hand held and have had no issues doing so.
I shoot at Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay on a daily basis and I see lots of folks using mono pods and tripods. But they are limited and cannot react as fast as a hand held system. Not to say that they do not capture beautiful images.

Isn't it great that there is at least one neighborhood store willing to cater to the folks in the neighborhood!
