This guy changed a player's loyalty to one team, forever.

Bill Dickey wore the number first (1930 to 1946). Then, it was assigned to Yogi Berra (1948 to 1963). Later, when it was being considered for retirement, the Yankees retired the number in honor of both players.

It started with Curt Flood. Messersmith finished it. No team could own you forever. Let alone the loyalty factor. Messersmith did get his $1 million dollars. The very first to get that amount of money. Now, some baseball players are getting long term contracts, upwards to $427 million dollars. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, is one of them. He is compared, to the late Mickey Mantle of the NY Yankees.

...and starting pitchers were allowed routinely to go full 9 innings or more!

Thanks for the clarification. At any rate, team loyalty is not what it used to be. One can start playing with the Yankees and end his career with the hated Red Sox.

Yes, those dreaded Red Sox. The Dodgers lost back to back World Series to the American League. First, the Astros, then those dreaded Red Sox. It use to be a Yankee vs Dodgers rivalry. Dodgers have not won a World Series since 1988. Agonizing for Dodgers fans. Baseball experts, say the best match-up for a World Series, is Yankees vs Dodgers. Not anymore. Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009, under manager Joe Girardi. He was fired. Because, he didn't win another one shortly thereafter.

I actually saw Joe DiMaggio once in a store in Los Angeles a long time ago. He was married to Marilyn Monroe. He was known to make trips to put flowers on her grave. And was a good friend to Frank Sinatra. I didn't attempt to say hello to him. Some celebrities, prefer that you leave them alone in public.

This is a photo of my Uncle with Joe DiMaggio...

Wow! I'm jealous.

"56" in '41- Records are made to be broken. Not this one. I should say, never.

Since then, the closest was "44" in '78 by Pete Rose.

Not ALL the single digits are gone. As of 2019, Adam Ottavino will reportedly wear '0' (zero).

Now, that is one photo you should cherish. I don't think anyone will ever break his record of 56 straight hits. Pete Rose tried and failed. Pete Rose will never get to the Baseball Hall of Fame. After the latest allegation about him was revealed.

The Yankees have plenty of room on the back of their jerseys, as they don’t have their names there.
