A friend recommended this camera for traveling. It’s light and zooms to 600 ...he loves the images. Anyone have any thoughts on this camera?

I love mine. And I usually shoot a D810 and large, heavy lenses. I don't consider it a substitute, but it's great for grab n' go shooting.

The camera gets good reviews, but for me it is still not SMALL enough. You would still have it around your neck and in my opinion, this makes it too BIG to take.
Please, I travel a lot with my wife, and I have found the best TRAVEL CAMERA to be a small point and shoot that you can put in a belt pouch and then you can travel hands free and with nothing hanging around your neck.
I personally use two Sony camera's, 90% of the time I use the Sony HX-99V, it has a pop up viewfinder, very nice for outdoor shooting, and has a Zeiss 24-720 mm zoom. Has a pop up flash for auto fill and it's HDR is a good one. My other camera is the Sony RX100M2, it is an older version but this one has a hot shoe for my bigger flash.
Both can fit into a Nikon Coolpix belt clip. VERY VERY NICE for travel. I included a shot of the pouch and a photo taken on our Rhine river trip last June with the HX-90V.

This is an outstanding camera. However, it is the size of a DSLR and does not fit in any pocket. I sold all my Canon equipment to buy this camera. It is the only one I use, has everything I need. Good luck.
