To all you good folks who are planning on going on a cruise...
Please research your choices carefully. The cruise industries are not good stewards of our environment. They falsely consider their corporate profits more important than the places they visit.

I have never gone on a cruise, have one planned for June on the Columbia River by American Cruise Lines. Wonder if they are affiliated with Carnival?

I've been on several Carnival cruises with no complaints. That said, my sister in laws' husband is a former CFO for Carnival. He retired several years back...

As a passenger you would have a good experience. The industry depends on passengers having a good time. However, what goes on behind the scenes is appalling. I speak from experience as I was a crew member on a cruise ship for a brief time.

Traveling with the CFO helped as well as the Captain and others knew who he was....

I have been on quite a few cruises over the past few years, but I have gradually become disillusioned so I am not going on any more
My main reasons being the size of the huge vessels dumping vast amounts of tourists in the places they call at and ruining them, eg: Venice, Dubrovnik, New Orleans etc, also the amount of pollution created while at sea and in ports.
My worst cruise was with Carnival.
My best cruise was with Fred Olsen.

Too many people in one place all competing for activities, the pool, the shore excursions. Lots of lines to stand in. My preference is to go somewhere new and spend a week seeing local attractions - whether a national park or a major city like NO, NYC, Seattle, San Francisco, DC - there are so many places to see, and you have your own experience, not one that was packaged up for you.

As a Marine attached to the 6th Fleet I had the good fortune of being a guest of the US Navy on one of their luxury vessels. The accommodations were spartan but functional, not quite up to my personal standards, but we did get three meals a day and got paid too.

I quite agree. In 1961 we were on a 3 month Med. Cruise. The ship was an LST, 1174 Grant County.

My friend's dad goes on a cruise yearly and I think he leaves the camera home and takes his fork! All he does is eat and he starts out about 350 lbs. don't know what he comes home. For me, I have had about 3 or 4 free cruises but my wife won't go out past what she can swim back so I have given them away. I always thought it would be a fun thing to do.

I’ve been on a number of cruises, and the only one that was pure crap was a Carnival cruise. The others were nice.

For me, this is the last word on cruising:
