France / Giverny - 1: Monet's Garden of Inspiration: Museum & Neighborhood

Following my lengthy series through Brittany and Normandy, I am posting a mini-series on GIVERNY, which is also situted in Normandy. We visited Giverny while we were staying for a few weeks in Paris, a short time before we started the Brittany/Normandy drive.

The famous impressionist painter Claude Monet lived in his house in Giverny for 40+ years. The expansive "Clos Normand" flower garden, and particularly also the Water Garden in the back of the property, which was inspired by Japanese gardens, provided Monet peaceful scenes and ample inspiration.

In this 3-part posts, I will try over the next 3 days to convey a slight impression of the magical gardens - hopefully for all to enjoy and possible for a few to be inspired to go and visit this wonderful place - it is really not very far from Paris and can be reached either by bus or by train from Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris.

An additional hint: To see more of Monet's works, the Musée-Marmottan in the 16th arrondissement of Paris features the greatest collection of Monet's paintings worldwide.

I tried but have not been successful in identifying the 3 paintings in # 4 - 6, so if any knowledgeable individuals can provide me with a name/description, I would be very pleased.

As usual, the photos look better on download.

Thanks for taking us there.
It's a gold mine for photography.
I must admit, the seafood salad looks real good.

Thank you Richard, it really is a gold mine for photography - and I couldn't resist it - I just had to post that salmon salad picture ...

Thanks PixelStan77 for looking in. I did get a couple of shots of 2 different bridges, one will be posted on Friday. The water lillies were not blooming when we were there, so I just got a few shots of the leaves, and not particularly good ones. So on this trip, the concentration was particularly on the flowers, which I will post in the next 2 days.

The restaurant of which I posted a front picture, backyard and food pictures is just opposite of the entrance to the Monet property, cannot miss it. We were quite happy with the food there.

Have a good trip to Paris - my favorite city in the world - actually we plan to be there in late August or September as well, but haven't solidified the dates yet. Have you visited Paris before? If not, or if you would like some further input as to restaurants and places to visit, pm me and I will be glad to follow up on it.

PS - I will post 20 more pictures in the next 2 days. If you want to see all the pictures, visit my website (weberwest.weebly.com) and click on the Chronological tab - the 2 albums are on line 2015 May - European Cities 4 - Giverny, about 20 lines down from the top. Normally I recommend to look at the Short album because the Full albums are too voluminous, but there are only 90 pictures in the Giverny Full album so you might want to try this.

In my other life I had to travel to France many times on business. Love the culture, sites, people and way of life. Would stay in Paris at the Intercontinental next to the Louvre. First trip to Monets Gardens

Great, then you know all about this great city. I lived one year there when I was 20, and we go back almost every year for a few weeks to a month. Enjoy your trip!

Nice. We really enjoyed Giverny too. What will bring a chuckle is every time you see one of Monet's works with the green bridge, you'll think Hey! I've been on that bridge!

Thank you Fred - and yes, memories mean so much and it's great to get them re-kindled every once in a while!

#4 and #5 appear to be in the style of Paul Cezanne, a contemporary and friend of Monet's. Many artists collected each other's works. I have not yet had a chance to visit there, but it would not surprise me if Monet's collection at his home would include others such as his good friend Renoir. Cezanne's style inspired Picasso to invent cubism. He is considered the bridge from Impressionism to Cubism in the evolution of art styles. #6 is more Monet's style, but I have never seen it before in books. I enjoy all your pix. Thanks.

Thanks for your input and I am pleased that you enjoy the pictures. Interesting art history of which I know very little. We will get into the flowers shortly.
