I use the lightroom subscription. I tried to load pictures into lightroom. Some of the pictures were displayed as duplicates. By duplicates I mean the same image and the same photo number for each image was displayed. However this did not occur with all images. I attempted to complete the loading process by clicking on the "explanation mark" on each photo. I followed the steps for loading to completion. The picture would not load and the "explanation mark" remained. I tried the process more than once but was unsuccessful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
While you await ideas from UHH, open a technical support chat with Adobe and asked for their help. They should be able to connect to your computer and "see" the exact situation, maybe better than you can describe in writing.
Thank you. I will give it a try.

There is an import option that treats JPEG and RAW files as separate files. If you shot in both, you may have selected that option. If you did, they will both display.

Is it possible that the card you used had older images on it that you forgot to format over? I've done that before. If you don't have the "Don't import Duplicates" box checked the software will try to load the images, possibly creating duplicates. As always with these issues, more specific and detailed information would be helpful. You might also consider reading the Help manual found online for the software, specifically the Library Module section. Click at the top of your computer where it says Help.
In addition to these suggestions don't forget to check the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" box under the File Handling section.

It is almost certainly one of the two answers above from dsmeltz or via the lens. Check the suffix on the files and the import dates to be sure.
I've had both happen to me in my early days of using Lightroom. Just delete the duplicates if they're second copies, or rename if you've got both RAW and JPEG versions.

I have to ask, how did you do the loading? USB from the camera or inserting the card directly into the computer? Does you camera have two card slots? if so and if you downloaded directly from the camera, perhaps LR is downloading both cards and depending on how you set up the camera you may be download both a JPG and RAW image into the program...
The exclamation point or mark means that the image is in the catalog, but that the catalog doesn't know physically where the image is. This happens when you import images to LR and then move the image using an app other than LR to move it.
You have to understand that LR is more than just an editing program. It's way more. It's most powerful feature is the ability to catalog and organize your images. But you can easily screw things up by moving pictures outside of LR.
Workflow:
1. Import images to LR (many ways to do this) Try to import them to a folder on the computer where you plan to keep them and if you need to move them, use LR to do so.
2. Edit pictures using the Develop module
3. Export your images after Developing them. The Export module has many choices. Go through them all and familiarize yourself with all the choices. After you export the image, you keep the original and do whatever you want with the exported image. Usually people export to jpg format so that you can send a much smaller file via email or upload to social media or upload to a photo lab for printing. There are other reasons to export too but too many for me to explain. Treat the original images as though they are really film negatives so that you can always go back again and re-edit or print, or show to someone else.
4. If you are finished with your editing and exporting and now you decide that you need to archive the images, use LR like you would any other file management program to move your images to a place to keep for the future. Usually people will move them to an external hard drive for archival purposes. Always use LR to move, delete images.
If you are new to this and don't have a lot of pictures in LR yet, you can start over by creating a new catalog and importing the images again. The easiest way to import images that are already situated on your hard drive exactly where you like them, is to open LR, create a new "catalog", then go to the Gridview of the Library module. Make LR fit half the screen, open up your Windows Explorer or Mac Finder then find the folder where your images are and drag and drop into the center of LR's Library module. This will "copy" the images to the new catalog and you'll get rid of all the exclamation marks. Now LR will be cataloging your images correctly. Again, the exclamation mark means that the image is in the catalog, but that the catalog can't find the actual image on your computer.
