If you're traveling thru St. George, go west to Snow Canyon State Park; it's like a mini Zion. Lots of places to stop and hike. Amazing scenery, and it's little known. On your way to Zion check out Quail Creek Lake. It's about a mile and half from Highway 9. Overlook parking and it's free.

Zion: If you're wealthy stay in Springdale. For a 15 minute drive you can save 1/2 or more. The La Quinta Inn at La Verkin is only a year old, free breakfast buffet and great rooms.

From Moab to Zion the scenic route is Hiway 24 to Torrey. On the way stop at Goblin Valley State Park and there's good food at Duke's Slickrock Grill in Hanksville. At Torrey take Hiway 12 through Escalante to Bryce then Zion, stopping off at Kodakchrome Basin State Park. Fantastic scenic route!

At Zion, Springdale is right at the entrance to the park but very pricey. An option is LaVerkin, UT which is only about 12-15 miles to the park, and will be less expensive for hotels.

Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyons are in Arizona at the Utah line--stay in Page. Definitely go to Monument Valley. The roads are dirt, but if it hasn’t rained, going in your own car is ok. We did it easily in a Honda Odyssey.

Also, if you’re going all those places, you should go ahead and visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is very different from the south rim.

You can get on a tour in Monument. Don’t consider driving the road in your car. There is a hotel there.

Many hotels in Moab for Arches and Horseshoe Bend. Bryce has a couple outside Park. For Zion stay in Springdale.

Stay in Price if you want to do Antelope Canyon.

That will keep you busy several weeks.

If you go through Kanab plan on eating at Houston's Best Chicken Fried Steak you can get. North Rim of the GC eat at the lodge the main dinning room. The food is better than the cafeteria and not that much more expensive. Lodging stay in the parks if you can. The North Rim of the GC does not open until the middle of May. You might consider staying at the Jacobs Lake lodge, run by my friends. Lots of snow this year all around and we just got more this week. In the higher elevations expected to last through June. Maybe into July.

we loved the Navajo gal/guide in monument valley, lived in Page for a year 40 yrs ago, and learned more in 4 hrs from this gal and sunrise tour than all the months we lived in Page. stayed at John Wayne/Huston lodge, was neat and quiet and beautiful...

Did all of these last year and my number one do not miss would be Zion!!!

I love Zion. I hiked/climbed up Angles Landing back in the summer of 1990. I'll never forget it. Today I still hike other trails there, but once up Angles Landing was enough. At least at my age.

Here are a couple of photos taken with my film camera back then that I scanned. They are good enough to give an idea of a small part of the climb.

First photo I was hanging onto chains and using the foot holes to climb up this section with the parking lot far below.

The second photo is of a rock that I crawled across on my belly. It was almost straight down on both sides. Maybe by now they put some kind of pole and chain to hold onto. You were on your own back then.

Did I mention I'm scared of heights? That made it more exciting.

I'm now 72 and still do a lot of hiking, but no more climbing. Glad I have the memories of past climbs.
