Just sent my D500 to Nikon to have the XQD slot replaced as some of the pins are bent. I have no idea why or how this happened. It was a Lexar card I have been using in the camera for over a year with no problems. The card inserts into the card reader just fine but I'm nervous about using it again after the camera comes back. I'm a bit confused why the pins bent. I think from now on I will download from camera and never take the card out. By the way 333.00 dollars to fix it plus probably buying another xqd card. Well I have the SD slot which doesn't have pins to use.
Has anyone had this problem with the XQD slot?
Those are similar to the CF card slots that many cameras still employ. I've never bent my pin in my CF slots but many people do. I have a feeling that most of the time it happens because people just push the card in without much thought process into what or how they engage the pins. I think if people did think about it for a moment before inserting their cards, pins would never get bent. What I mean by this is the the proper way to insert one of these types of cards is to push the card into the slot and feel for the resistance when the card starts to engage the pins. In other words, insert the card most carefully at first so that you stop pushing as soon as you feel the card bottom out as it just begins to engage the pins and then push the card the rest of the way in by using steady but slow pressure in the center of the card until it fully engages the pins. Done. Never push the card in with one big push. Never....
Many times I believe it is improper card insertion.

👍👍 Exactly right. It’s not a problem with the card, there’s enough slop in the card guides that if you just shove it in with one motion, you can bend pins. Learned this the hard way, but just once! Jeep Daddy’s instructions are spot on. If you do it that way, it’s very difficult to bend a pin.
Okay sounds good but I've been putting xqd cards in my D4 and D500 for a long time and I don't just slam them in there. I think it should be near impossible to bend pins. I'm waiting to talk to the Nikon technician as soon as he replaces it to get thoughts on what went wrong.
Thanks

If a card is inserted properly, nothing bad will happen.
Never had this problem. I have 2 d500. I never take the cards out. In camera format all the time. Initially I insert the cards as described here, very carefully.
That's why I advise everyone to download their cards by plugging them into the computer with the cord that comes with the camera. If the op had done that he could have saved $333.00. I have 5 Nikon bodies and I have never since 2004 bent a pin. I bent one once using a card reader so I stopped that and never remove the card once it is put in.

Yep, if you never touch the card once it’s inserted, you’ll never have a physical problem with it. Unless one is ham-handed USB plugs and sockets are not easily damaged.
Well I never knew there was an issue but as for all the replies above I'm definitely leaving the card in and transferring from the camera. I let everyone know what Nikon says why they believe there was an issue. I still think it should be a non issue for a piece of equipment that costs that much. It should be built to an higher standard.
The D500 is built to a higher standard but electronics are really delicate.

I'm confused too. XQD uses card edge connections just like SD cards do, don't they? So what "pins" are we talking about here? Did you actually see something bent in the slot?

I use the SD slot on my computer and leave the XQD in my D500.

Yes you can see the bend pins they will look a lot different then the good ones.

Oh the D500 is an amazing camera but the pins and the compartment they fit in should be built to a higher standard for day to day use. The point being they might as well have put internal memory in the camera if you have to worry about bent pins. It is a weak point that Nikon needs to address.
