Setting up a camera, any camera, depends on the types of photos you want to take and the types of lenses you want to use. That’s one reason there are so many different options in the camera. Keep this in mind when you check out various sources. And keep in mind that you can use the D1 and D2 memory modes to set your camera up without having to go back through the menu.

I am no pro but my question is, which are the subjects you photograph more often? Setting the camera for landscapes or portraits is not the same as setting the camera for action photography.

The 7000 series nikon are great cameras but little is discussed by pros about the proper ways to set-up your camera. These cameras have lots of options but it would be nice to get opinions from the pros on this.
thanks

2miska! You mentioned the Nikon D7200: a great camera as I have an older D7100. The D7200 is similar but with a bigger buffer. I recently picked up a used Nikon D3s for its low light, low noise capabilities at a great price from eBay. First thing I did was Google or Duck GoGo "Best settings for Nikon D3s camera." You can do that for your D7200. As there many different genres, individual photographers will, through their website, blogs, forums, etc, generously share their settings with others and reasons why. Every camera can be found! It's a lot quicker than reading any number of test reports, etc. Cheers. Ed

Thom Hogan's D7200 Guide is excellent. Steve Perry's website has a lot of Nikon camera tips. Both of these gentlemen are photographers that write in a language that photographers understand. I have the D7200, D500 and D850 and all three have similar menus and controls. Info an any of them is helpful.

Generally, but not always, pros don't use crop cameras.

You forgot about the D500 when you said that. I'm a retired pro and I use mine for soccer and baseball at the local high school level. Never for low light, but always in sunshine.

I'm a Pro ( I have been published 6 times ) and I own two D7200 bodies. Depends on what subject a pro is shooting.

I to have a D500. For those who found fault with what I said, please go back a reread each word. It does NOT say pros don't use crop sensor cameras. Generally, pros use full frame cameras, at least every pro I've known or delt with. That doesn't mean they don't use crop sensor cameras, it means more than likely they will be using full frame cameras. I also have a D7200. So no, I didn't forget about anything. Most pros I know or have dealt with in the past few years were using one of the following for pro work. Nikon D4, D5, D810, D850, Canon 5DIII, 5DIV, 1DX, 1DX II, 5DSr.

Most understood your intent. Some simply want something to argue about.
It is like laying in wait for weakness.

I recently bought a very lightly used D7100 body that was on consignment at a local photography store. The previous owner included a book that has been very helpful to me. Perhaps he also wrote one for the D7200. The author is J. Dennis Thomas and the title is Nikon D7100 - Digital Field Guide. The publisher is John Wiley and Sons.

Aperture, Time, ISO, Raw-Jpeg, Metering and focusing you can adjust with the buttons on camera body.
The adjustment about file names, file numbers, and what and each memory card slot does.....is in the menu.
I wouldn’t do more adjustments because till you know and understand this camera you will make mistakes and to reset Nikon can be painful. I reset the D7000 and D810 after this I got the advice to leave adjustments alone. Yes I bought the book from David bush for the 810 but you tube answers most of my questions because I can’t find the adjustments I need it in the book.

Aperture mode F8 Auto iso 200-6400 ( external flash works at 800 iso) Sharpness to +9. Single point autofocus. JPEG basic. Don't forget to fine tune the lens. Tape up the dials and just use it.

Understandable. But not everybody who is into photography is trying to achieve professional or expert status. I'm sure many professionals started on FX type cameras and would have great information to share with the rest of us. Maybe one day I'll achieve that status
