Simply wonderful and the Zoos appear to be taking good care of them. If it weren't for the zoo, I'd never see one up close. I wonder what they think about US....???????Ha ah

African lions are the top predators of their range. Lions can weigh up to 500 pounds. The species' tan coat blends in among the vegetation of its home, helping it to stalk prey. Males are larger than females and can be distinguished by their mane, which surrounds the head and extends down to the chest.

The big cats prey on large hoofed animals, such as gazelles, impalas, zebras and wildebeest. They will also scavenge and eat smaller prey, if necessary. Hunting often occurs in groups. The malesโ€™ manes and larger size make them more conspicuous, so females do the majority of the hunting.

African lion populations are classified as vulnerable, with numbers declining due to habitat loss throughout Africa.

African lion

Lions live in prides of 2-40 members; the average group has 13 members. The species breeds year-round. Males compete fiercely for the ability to breed with prides of females. Young males often band together to gain control of a pride, with stronger males forcing weaker ones out in battles that can end in the death of the loser.

Lions are most frequently found in savannas where prey is most prevalent. Lions also live in forests, shrubby habitats, mountains and semi-deserts. Except for a small population of the Indian lion subspecies that remains in northwest India, lions now live only in Africa, from the Sahara's southern fringe to northern South Africa.

Lions in zoos may live into their late teens or early 20s. In the wild, a lioness may live up to 16 years, but males rarely live past the age of 12.

These are beautiful captures Paul. The first shot head bump brings a smile to my face. That male African Lion is magnificent. The last shot of the female Lion is so sweet. She looks just like one of my kitties viewed through a magnifying glass. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Thank you angler, Jack, John, MerryTexan, Dennis, AVI8TOR, Blair, Karin, fbeaston, Susan, Earnest, DaveJ, DeanS, Jan, Shang! The first couple, Adelor and Myra, both were long-lived at Lincoln Park in Chicago, having several litters of cubs. Both have passed away of old age and the zoo now has one male and a pair of sisters, all still getting to know each other. Glad you enjoyed.
