Does anyone have experience with this lens and the reason it does not come with an image stabilizer. I will use it on a 5DMarklV. Comments appreciated.

I have a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens without IS. The formula for the minimum handheld shutter speed is 1/focal length. At 70mm you should shoot at not less than 1/70 sec. For shorter focal lengths, like your 24mm, it is recommend that you shoot at not less than 1/50 sec to prevent inducing blur. As we get older the shutter speed needs to be moved up above this formula.

I was considering the F4 IS but the reviews noted it was weakest at 50mm which is what I use most. I suspect it is pretty comparable to the 24-105 F4L IS II which I found disappointing, especially compared to the 16-35 and 100-400 you mention which I also own.

I use the 24-70 f/4 IS. It is as sharp as the 24-70 f/2.8 II I had. My copy is good throughout the zoom lengths. It weighs half as much as the 2.8 and works well on my Mark IV and my EOS RP Mirrorless. I wouldn't hesitate to consider it if you don't need 2.8.

Those rumors have been floating around for years.

The most recent news is that there will be an RF 24-70mm f/2.8L with IS (for the full frame mirrorless Canon, not their DSLRs). Canon filed a patent for this lens in January and confirmed it in a mid-February announcement. The full announcement of this and five other RF lenses (in addition to the four existing ones) currently slated to become avail. can be seen here: https://global.canon/en/news/2019/20190214.html

There is no indication other than vague rumors and some wishful thinking that there may be or ever will be a similar EF lens in the works for the DSLRs.

Have the 24-70 F4 version. Decided on the 35mmF1.4Lii over the replacing my F4 with the 2.8.

The extra creative possibilities with bokeh and low light shutter speeds convinced me in the end. The F4 IQ difference from the 2.8 wasn't enough to sell me.

If I was buying my first 24-70, I may be convinced to get the 2.8 but given I already had one and the IQ was good enough, I wen tthe 35mm route.

I find I use my 35mm most often doing still/couples work and the 24-70 ONLY when I I need fast framing flexibility...otherwise I zoom with my feet:-)

I have a higher end variety of this lens and it comes with both stabilization and af. It’s a remarkable piece of glass that makes me better than I am.

There is also more distortion at 24 mm with the F4 version. FWIW, I've never really missed the IS on the 24-70 F2.8L II. I can usually compensate with a little higher ISO to make sure I don't get motion blurring. The stabilized version of the 24-70 2.8L II rumored to be in the works could come out soon but as amfoto said that rumor has been floating around for several years. Canon has also put most of their emphasis with the new Milc RF lenses. Besides, the 24-70 2.8L II can be found at a record low right now and rest assured, the IS version when it/if released will be close to $3,000. The version II lens when it first came out retailed for $2299. With IS, it will be considerably more.

The 24-70 2.8L II requires very little sharpening in post. The clarity and detail it resolves is amazing. It's one of my favorite L lenses.

Presently you can buy a refurbished lens for $1419.20 right now from Canon direct.

I have this lens (almost ) permanently mounted to my Canon 5DIV and I Love it.
The only shortcoming the lens has for me is the short range of 24-70mm and the cost/value per $ spent. However, I knew this when I hit the "purchase" button.
The relatively short zoom is the only shortcoming (outdoors) that affects me.
The F2.8 throughout the range (24-70mm) really helps indoors (in low light situations) with focus and flash when a flash is desired.
Please keep in mind that I can brace myself indoors and successfully handhold this body/lens combination for a relatively long (?) time.
Smile,

Happy Easter!

Not the Canon version...no IS on the 24-70 f/2.8 II.
