Established on December 25, 1863 “to provide a proper resting place for the remains of the brave men who fell upon the fields” of Chattanooga....during the Civil War.

A somber, serene, and sobering place to spend some time while visiting the area...just returned a few days ago.

It's a big and well kept cemetery. Your photos capture the beauty and peacefulness of the place. I visited November 2017 to photograph what I think are the most historical gravestones here. During the Civil War a group of Union soldiers (Andrews Raiders) snuck into Confederate territory with the goal of stealing a Confederate locomotive and running it back north to Union held ground. Well, their plan almost worked but they ran out of fuel (wood) while being chased by a Confederate locomotive a few miles south of Chattanooga. Several of the men were captured. The leader was hung, some of the others were executed also. All of them are buried here in a circle around a big memorial. This event became known as the The Great Train Chase of 1862. I can post a photo if you'd like to see the memorial. Great job on these...enjoyed them.

Thank you, James, for the compliments and for telling the story of the Andrews Raiders. I agree it is a very interesting saga. I took a cell phone pano that shows the locomotive...it sounds like you have a photo that will show the monument in better detail...yes, feel free to post your photo of the locomotive....thanks.

That's it. You got it. Well, I'm not going to post mine then. I just wasn't sure if you knew about the monument. Keep up the great job your doing. I enjoy your stuff.

Thank you for honoring all these fallen warriors. You really captured the stark reality of the sacrifices of so very many. When exiting Arlington after the tears and the lump subside I look over at my wife and say:"if you come out of here and not feel patriotic you need to get the hell out"!
