This squirrel photo taken in central Indiana does not appear to be the normal squirrel I find in this area. It has more red/orange color in it than those I am used to. My book shows one that is mostly similar but the ears are not as bushy. Or could this be a juvenile? Any help will be appreciated.
That could be a piney squirrel. That is what we called them. I had several around my house in Fort Wayne. They were quite aggressive.
That would be an American Red Squirrel.
The American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is a tree squirrel found in areas with coniferous trees. Their main diet consists of conifer cone seeds. As it name would suggest, the American red squirrel is distinguished by its reddish fur. It has a relatively smaller size and weighs between 200 and 250 g. Since the squirrel has a large population in Canada, Alaska, British Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains, the species has been classified as a least concern species. However, the squirrel’s population is under threat of decline in Arizona.
The Red Squirrels here in Fort Wayne, IN (northeast IN) seem to be thriving
on oak tree acorns. During a walk in Shoaff Park you see many of them in
and around the oak trees. A few Red tail hawks around the park too picking off
the occasional squirrel.
