Short answer: Electric car well-to-wheel emissions are far, far less than gasmobile well-to-wheel emissions.

New technology always makes lots of people uncomfortable. It’s just a part of human nature to fear the unknown. That’s the way it was with radios, telephones, and air travel before we got used to those newfangled things.

Unfortunately, there are always some people who spread false information about new technology, especially if it threatens to interrupt their source of income. That’s precisely what is happening with the electric car revolution right now. The people who have become wealthy selling cars and the fuels that make them go are petrified that electric cars are going to deprive them of the enormous profits they are used to, so they manufacture falsehoods designed to scare people away from considering purchasing one.

Nope, can't envision one in my future.

Ohio politicians are beginning to salivate about hybrids and all electrics. The governor recently signed a bill that included a law, piggybacked on the bill, to charge the owners of environmentally friendly vehicles hundreds more usage taxes every year when we renew our plates. They feel those vehicles cause the enough wear and tear on our roads to warrant it, and since such vehicles like hybrids and all electrics get such good mileage the owners were not paying enough road tax because they use less, or no gasoline, the price of gasoline includes a road tax on a per gallon basis. For those of us that own a hybrid but are low mileage per year drivers, retired, we are really getting screwed. The fees go into place in July of this year. I wonder how much road wear is caused by big pickups? Yeah they use more gasoline, but does that really compensate for the road wear? And to think we used to get federal tax advantages to buy fuel efficient vehicles! Then some politico figures out a new way to dip into our pockets.

We love our Lincoln hybrid. 45 mpg, 500 mile range, super comfortable for travel and zips around town like a sports car. Can buy gas anywhere!

I would wait until later in the year as there are so many new all electric models coming out.

Diesels are king over here but they are being slated for toxins but Audi, Mercedes have cut toxins on the latest. I wonder how many of you are just quoting the actual MPG or what the car computer is telling you. Top up the tank zero the trip counter then top up again and read the mileage that's a fairly accurate way to check. Electric never, self driving never in a billion years I enjoy driving so I'm not going to let some computer do it for me, look what happened to that unfortunate Boeing.

Drove a friends Tesla Model S 100D ludicrous. Fastest car I’ve ever driven from 0–100 MPH. Amazing

Exactly!
Between the inefficient batteries and generation of electricity to charge them, the electric car is far from a panacea. People do not look at the big (real) picture.

I did that exercise with my old Prius (2005-2017) and my new Prius (2017...). The calculation is not exact for a single fill-up since the nozzle shutoff is different at every gas station and in part depends on just how the nozzle is inserted into the tank, so every fill-up is slightly less than full by a different amount. Over 10-20 fills the car reports a mileage that is pretty close to the calculation, probably to two significant figures.

But I really don't have to worry about a few cents difference in gas price at different stations since when my "nearly-empty" indicator comes on, it only takes around 9 gallons for a fill.

What is the real cost of manufacturing those inefficient batteries and generating the electricity (with fossil fuels)? The electric or hybrid car is FAR from saving the planet at this time and costs much more in totality of power use.

I read that article and all the comments. What, exactly, do you think it proves, that electric or hybrid cars are no good, that we should abandon development and manufacture of them and stick with gasoline? I put an array of photovoltaic panels on my house and yard which supply 95% of my electricity. My bill has gone from $335 to $10.60. I don't drive much. I have a minivan to carry my recumbent trike and a sports car with manual shift. The former is 14 years old and the latter is 19 years old. I hope to keep driving them until I die. I'd rather spend my money on travel than on new cars. But if I ever *had* to replace them, I'd go for a hybrid if one was available in a minivan configuration.

Battery power will always be challenged by winter cold. The batteries are made to power the car, run the defroster, run the heater, and keep the rear window clear. Range is also a limiting factor in the utility of battery power. Unless battery technology improves drastically, I believe the tech will remain a novelty.

Another factor beyond the short range and too few charging stations is the time to charge. High charge rate requires high current flows which will have an effect on the physio-chemical process that will proceed in accordance with the laws of physical chemistry.

The ideal electric car would charge while driving an use solar to charge while parked.

some companies are putting in charging stations for their customers to use while they shop or fueling their bodies. I am here know of a target that has about 30 charging stations a McDonalds that has 4 and my company has several for employee use.

Recently rode in a Tesla twice and it is interesting and quite nimble. It doesn't ride smooth though and takes the bumps rather harshly. It has a huge screen for everything and is so quiet when it travels.

I am afraid of electrical fires potentially and worry that the technology is ahead of the local provisions to accommodate it. Not too many charging stations available yet and that is a problem.

I will wait several years before I consider ever getting one for keeps.
