Suddenly, these flycatchers are all over the place, going after bugs in the treetops. As a result, I never really get close to them. Never the less, they stay still long enough to be photographed, and they often return to the same perch after a short bug chase.

Fine kingbird shots, Katy. We only have the Eastern variety here in KY, and I'm looking forward to watching them this year.

Do your western birds have that hidden red crest that they can show in times of high agitation? First saw it in a photo I took of a kingbird mobbing a blue heron over our local park pond. Thought I had some kind of hot pixel defect until I got home and read up on it!

Love Kingbirds and their sometimes cooperation on nice perches and soft backgrounds. And they sometimes cooperate by perching on vegetation in boom for nice colors. Great opportunities and you got some nice shots. I'm sure you will be back for more! Thanks for sharing.

Marshall, I have never heard about or seen a photo of a red crest. Do you mean it's like the Ruby-crowned Kinglet's? I would love to see your photo of it on a Kingbird. Can you post it?

Good shots Katy, I like the whole set. We get Tropical, Cassin's, Western and Thick-billed Kingbirds down here and with the exception of Cassin's none of them are easy shots. You did really well to get these shots.

Found it. Sorry, but I've never seen it closer than this:
