One tough aircraft able to take a lot of punishment and still come home. I was also stationed at DaNang and used to go to the snack bar for Air America at the airport and watch the F4s take off or do fly-boys, sometimes on afterburner. One morning, I saw an F4 pilot eject while the plane was still on the runway (don’t remember whether taking off or landing). The shoot opened - sort of. The pilot was injured, but I understand he survived.

I worked at that snack bar on my day off. Gained a ton of weight, they allowed us to eat whatever we wanted.

What a great shot of my favorite war plane. I was stationed at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in 1971. I worked on EC-121s which were radar equipped. But, they also had F-4s there (and 105s). What a thrill to watch them take off at night. Awesome sight, I'll never forget.

I was at Takhli Thailand and supposed to go to Korat and load on the 105, but hurt my back loading 500s and cross trained into the medics. Go figure, bomb loader 46250 to medic 90230.

I couldn’t believe it when we discovered it. One night about midnight, one of the guys said:” want to go get a burger?” I just laughed, because such an idea was absurd in the middle of the night (and not that easy in the daytime). He then drove us over to the Air America (CIA) snack bar, which I believe was open 24-7.

I have seen the F-4C and the D version take off and about half way down the runway turn and fly (or more accurately rocket) into the sky completely vertically. The engines had that kind of power.

Beautifully done, Shutterbug; the F-4 was an awesome fighter. I saw the Thunderbirds when they flew the Phantoms; it was an outstanding show.

This shot is doctored. As stated above, the gear being pulled that close to the ground simply is not happening. Good looking poicture, just don’t shit the troops.

I love the Phantom...a loud aircraft that could take a lot of punishment and bring back her crew safely. I was stationed at Seymour Johnson when the 4th TFW was flying them and remember the Blue Angels performing at Seymour in them. I have a photo taken from Baseops and showing one of the Angels so low to the runway that the bottom of the aircraft was below a truck sitting next to the runway. My parents visited me one day and took a wrong turn on base and ended up in the parking lot of the flying club on base and they watched as one of the Phantoms flamed out and both pilots ejected and the aircraft crashed off the end of the runway about a mile from where I lived at the time. I also was at the Dare County bombing range one day and sent up a pibal balloon to get some wind readings and one of the Phantoms shot down my balloon! That photo brings back good memories.

A very interesting shot to study. As shutterbug243 said it has been heavily cropped and that makes me believe a runway has been cropped out of the picture and that makes the background look much closer to the plane. Intriguing!

How close to the ground do you think it is?
