Use the Airdrop app that comes on the iPad and iMac. Google it to see how to set it up and use it.

Without a doubt, the best and fastest way is an app called PhotoSync. Load it on your iMac and in your iPad. Transfer is seamless and incredibly fast. I have used it for several years and I highly recommend it. It’s all done via internet connection so there are no cables. It’s very easy to learn. All you do is select the images on your iPad and click on PhotoSync. Then click PhotoSync on your iMac and you’re off and running.
It only allows jpgs. Image Capture lets you transfer RAW images.

Thanks. I never take raw with my iPhone or iPad so I’ve never tried it. By the way, how do you shoot raw with an iPad?

I am trying to transfer photos from my ipad into my imac, but having difficulties. The imac recognizes the ipad, but the import doesn't work. Is there anyway that I can import from my ipad into the imac?
Thanks in advance.

Your Mac comes with a program that is called "Image Capture". My be in your utilities folder. Use that to capture the photos off your iPad and iPhone.
Stolen from Apple. Note the iTunes version required.
Import Photos to your Mac
You can use the Photos app to import photos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac without using iCloud Photos. These steps also work for importing images from digital cameras and SD cards.
1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes on your Mac. Importing photos to your Mac requires iTunes 12.5.1 or later.
2. Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or digital camera to your Mac with a USB cable. If you're using an SD card, insert it into the SD slot on your Mac, or connect it using a card reader.
3. You might need to unlock your iOS device using your passcode. You might also see a prompt on the iOS device asking you to Trust This Computer. Tap Trust to continue.
4. On your Mac, the Photos app automatically opens. If it doesn't, open the Photos app.
5. The Photos app shows an Import screen with all the photos and videos that are on your connected device. If the Import screen doesn't automatically appear, click the Import tab at the top of the Photos app, or click the device's name in the Photos sidebar.
6. To import a selection of photos, click the ones you want, then click Import Selected. To import all new photos, click Import All New Photos.
7. You can now disconnect your device from your Mac. If you imported photos from an SD card or other USB device, safely eject the device first.
8. In macOS High Sierra or later, imported photos appear in the Photos app's Import album. If you're using an earlier version of macOS, you'll find them in your Last Import album.
Photos and videos that you sync from your computer to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iTunes can't be imported back to your computer.
Learn what to do if you can't import photos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer.

And how is this helping the OP’s inquiry???
randave2001’s response reminds me of the difference between giving him a fish or teaching him to fish. Your comment did neither.

RAW is called HEIC format. Settings->Camera->Formats. Check High Efficiency.

While not technically RAW, HEIC is a higher quality image storage format. AFAIK all images are turned to 8-bit JPGs if they are not transferred with Image Capture, or other similar software.

See, now you are helping the OP, like many others here are. That wasn’t so hard was it??? Well done.

Thanks everyone for the response. I tried to use the icloud, and messed up every thing. I also lost all my photos in the ipad, and hopefully I have to find out where my sd card went.
Please clarify how your sd card is involved in this transfer. I looked through the thread but didn’t see that addressed.
I used to use a purchased app to transfer pictures between my iMac, iPad and iPhone until I realised that apple airdrop is the way to go. It’s so easy uncomplicated and quick. No need for anything else
